Without a pic I couldn't tell you right off hand. The idea behind patching is you want to have an even layer of mycelium all over the casing so you'll get an even pinset. You said he patched twice already. How is the rest of the casing looking?

Those are-Penis Envy South Americans, honey water/mycelium innoculated to "Penningtons Wild Bird Seed"(1 qt each)straight to bread pan with straight coir casing

Substrate depth=1 3/4 inches deep
Casing depth=1/2 inch deep

These pics were taken about 12 day's after innoculation.

then a casing looks like this dont you have to fear overlay ?
(meaning that the mycel on the top dies and forms a barrier, that obstructs pinning?)

why do you patch a casing? is it to increase the yield?

To let the slower mycelium catch up,so it will all come up even.

but, while patching you run a higher risk of contams, the reason i'm asking is because i found out one of my cakes out of 6 actually colonized most of a cake and had NO contams (unlike the other 5) and i decided to case the cake since my 1/2 pints have shoulders... it's my very first grow and i don't want to fuck it up with contams because i got greedy...

to patch or not to patch, that is the question.

If the mycelium shows up in one or two spots only, then yes I would patch(useing sterilised casing material of course),but if it comes through most of the layer evenly then I would not bother patching.
Those first 3 casing pics I posted was not patched at all,I just leveled the substrate really good(smoothed out with a sterile spoon),and I made sure the casing layer was just as even(useing the same spoon wiped with alcohol).
