What is this growth? [Re: ShroomBoomBoomBoom]
    #27145678 - 01/13/21 11:17 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Never seen this before—It’s been slowly growing on my freshly birthed cakes (birthed 1 week ago—still no pins)
Should I be concerned? It doesn’t look discolored or smell bad I’ve just never seen anything quite like it so I wasn’t sure if it was just colonizing the outside vermiculite or what.

I’m not seeing a ton of activity here so hopefully someone can help!

Hi Mycofiliacs,

Okay, let me (the lost noob) get this out of the way right up front: facepalm, head desk, facepalm and continue to repeat. I usually learn by fucking up.

Yes, I read "don’t use a kit." After I bought a kit.

A couple of attempts with (facepalm) the shitty Midwest Grow Kit supplies [Bod mentioned them so I thought I could do a full confession.]

All those years as a computer professional I knew that if all else fails RTFM. Unfortunately, that’s not such a great strategy, mycologically speaking. I admit it: I read why Midwest Grow Kits suck after I had some bad experiences with Midwest Grow Kits; and thank you Bod. I HAVE BEEN FULLY CONVERTED.

That said, here are the jars I have. Is every one garbage or should I a) birth them and fruit on perlite b) stick em in the fridge and try to get at least on set of plates with each strain OR c) toss em?

Mckennii: Jars 1-3

You did say lots of pictures, right?

Those jars except for the last one look great! I'd assume it stalled from contam? Those puppies want out! Birth them and do a SGFC, I've seen people skip the perlite so search up some teks! Fuck perlite if you can get around using it.

Yeah I've never seen a jar get split down the middle like that!

My only guess is that bacteria like that side of the jar for whatever reason

Maybe someone more experienced can chime in

Thank you so much. I'm upgrading my sterile environment by making an SAB today. Very stoked to move to agar and grain monotub. However, I still have unnocc'd fucking MWGKco BRF jars, but will start with agar TEK to ensure clean inoculation.

With this current set of nocc'd jars, I understand can make a couple shoeboxes with a bulk substrate; glad to discover I can break ups the cake into a substrate. What level of defcon sterility do i need for the transfer? I understand that colonized cakes are not overly prone to contamination, but what the fuck do I know [yet]?

Since I need to get these jars fruiting, I was considering, for the sake of expediency, getting some pre-sterilized substrate from Out-Grow.com to colonize with the cakes. Hopefully they are a better source, since they are sponsors.

Just to try to be sure of what I'm doing I'll search a BRF to bulk substrate TEK

I'll >try< the advanced search for the info.

Thanks again. I was breaking my broken head trying to absorb Kizzle's contam post.

RE: fuck perlite...

I already have sterile perlite. BUT my understanding is that if I break my spawn up in a bulk substrate I can expect a more bountiful harvest, is that correct?

TO ALL: If I'm asking these [I think related] questions in the wrong place I'd be happy to learn how to ask properly. I'm trying to inhale a huge amount of shroomery-wisdom at the speed of light.:laugh:

According to Kizzle's OP, that rectangular stall is indicative of bacteria. That, for me, is the only jar I can 'read' which is why I asked here.

I'm a noobie, but I would assume bacteria. When I get mold contams they are usually pretty noticeable since they grow myc and spore right on the myc. If it was mold I'd ASSUME that area would be green or purple or something by now.

This might help for your myco knowledge : https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24144021

This dude's got a shit ton of resources and links.

As for spawning BRF to bulk I can only offer my 2 cents as I've only ever done it once before switching to grain. I would just get some coco coir from your local pet store if you can. I get the eco earth 3 packs, 1 brick to ~1 gal (water 180 degrees) makes it easy. All I use is coir and spawn and works great for many people. As for cleanliness during spawning to bulk, I just take a shower before hand, put on fresh clothes, wear a hat, clean the tubs I'm going to use, and wear latex gloves. I usually try to do it in a closed space with no air current. As for lysoling the shit out of the room etc, I think that's overkill.

I'd say just try some shoe boxes with 100% coir. I also tend to have better results with a trash bag liner in the bottom. I hope this helps!

P.S. I think this IS the wrong place for this conversation but

Is this contamination? Or is it mycelium? Clean plates with no transferes show no contaminatio. This should be cubensis.

anyone help ? took two shots form the top so you an see the relative color difference from those 2 white spots with the rest of the Myc, and as close to a "close up" as I could get.

is this just spots of extra thick cottony myc or is this contam goin on???

no odd smells, no colors other than white so far- been about 2 days.

Untrained eye, but some of those dishes don't look clean. The middle bottom plate looks the best.

When it's not solid white and has suspicious growth patters it could mean a hidden contam. Your very first picture has something transparent growing out past the white mycelium. Could be a ninja contam. Make transfers from the middle bottom plate and if those look good you can let the other plates grow out all the way and study how they look.

So yes, you were right, found better plate where we can see the myc and contams... Did transfere you can see on foto . Contamination change agar color it eats food coloring? White spot where myc is have no color change.
