CC tek need's work to be easily shakable
    #2714778 - 05/22/04 03:27 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

On thursday i made my first cc batc of jars. I made 2 2L jars and 4 Q jars. I simered till the water got all slimey and thick then rinsed well 2x with hot water. I filled them about 3/4 full. Every jar the top 1" or so broke loose the whole bottom was a chunk that would take a good 5 min of shaking and bangingeach to break loose. So i was thinking next time mabey use 4 parts cc to 1 part coir to make it more shakable. DOes anyone have any better amandment to seperate the cc?

besides that CC looks good i did a g2g into the 2 2l jars and its colonizing nicely.

Chunky seems to be a serious defect to the process.
I suspect that alot of it has to do with the rinsing....i rinse the bejesus out o my batchs.
Also, you might want to think about vermiculite...a goodly dose of that helped out the last few jars i've seen immensely.
Also, having a tire (or something similar) to bang the jars against is a life saver.

But even if the chunks don't break up, they colonize pretty well anyways.

Edit: Also, it may be a good idea to add a 1/4, 1/5 ratio of finely chopped (1/2-1 inch segments) straw. This would probably keep the mess from sticking together, and be colonizable/edible. Just a thought.

Il try the straw and the coir. I'll see what works best. Thanks!

a teaspoon of gypsum will help keep it from clumping.

I'd love to hear what happens with this...i have yet to have time to run a straw-cc set.

I dont htink im going to be giving it a try anytime soon either. Those 2 2L jars are already fully colonized from 4 days ago using 3 big tablespoons of millit G2G andkept at a constant 85 F for incubation. conclusin CC is dam fast as i expected. I still think using millit is better for doing G2G but CC (or cc/straw) is much better to give that final G2G to before spawning it or using it as a substrate.

I just made my second batch using CC,there cooling and i just shook them and its much much better, almost as east to shake as as millit. This time i only boiled for 8 min (after the corn expanded absorbing lots of water) and rinsed real well for a good 5 min with cold then hot water stirring it the whole time.

I used 1 part straw in cut into 1/2"-1" pieces and 3 parts CC. I put the straw in 5 min before the CC because i know it needs a bit more cooking time. I think the straw helped make it more shakable and it might help to further speed up colonization, my theory is growth can grow allong the straw faster then jumping from corn to corn to corn. But the fact they arent overcooked and all sticky like with my last batch made them shake real easy. Now i'll see how fast they colonize  I have a colonized eq 100ml WBS test tubes o use and some other jars

I think the main problem's last time were i overcooked a bit and they werent analy rinsed.

Hmm....decent results....
larger jars (like half gallons) tend to have much more serious clumping problems, even when rinsed as your life depended on it.

I'll try this sometime.

No actually because my 1/2 gal jars have more mass in them i could get more momentum going and smash the clumps apart, i did 2 2L jars and 5Q jars. The quarts i still havent broken up but one and im waiting for the growth to grow down the jar, its almost done. The 1/2 gal jars were done in 4 days with G2G.

My last batch is cooling in my room, nice and loose. I have 3 mycobags of CC and straw stearalizing in my PC right now.
