What's the best wine?

I'm not much of wine guy (at all), but I have a weird urge to cop a bottle for some reason. Something semi-decent, too. My price ceiling I think for a bottle would be around $50 bucks -- anything over that I couldn't justify because you could hand my unsophisticated ass a thousand dollar bottle and unless you told me I wouldn't know if it was a thousand dollar bottle or a ten dollar bottle. Like I said I rarely drink wine.
So, anyone here got some good recommendations?

If you're looking for something semi sweet/sweeter try some red zinfandels, red table wine/blends, pinot noirs are pretty decent and not as sweet (to me mostly. I do tend to go for the sweeter types no matter the color. Desert wines are awesome. Cabernet Sauvignon can be VERY harsh and I bet there will be some people in here soon that say "It's the only true wine" and "fuck a bunch of Pinot's and sweet shit" etc...there are very few cabs I have liked.
I would do some research on the tastes they state on the labels (on back, usually a paragraph) as it's printed on them now mostly. You can more than likely do this online before you go to the store. Everyone will have different tastes and likes, plus asking a store employee can produce mixed results if you don't know what you want to ask for. Also try one that you think you might like and have never tried. Decent wines run in the 20-50 range, and a few in the teens. Shit on sale for 10 or under is usually crap.

Are you pairing with food? I no longer drink and was more ov an absinthe connoisseur, but I was never let down by a Spanish red(ham!) or French white(cheese!) in the $20-$30 range. There's some good bang-for-da-buck Chilean wines too.

Yeah, Chileans! Yeah niffla, try some wines with some foods. Look for pairings online with foods in your budget and you'll be pleasantly surprised how much flavors mingle to make your taste buds titillated! You like steaks right? Try a MR steak with oven roasted seasoned asparagus and some garlic mashed and a nice red table wine, red zin, pinot, or cab. It's pretty damn incredible when you get that perfect wine for your tastes with really good foods. Grilled fish and any meats are really incredible when you get the wine you like with food you like.

My brother's a wine connaisseur and he insists that a higher end wine thats undervalued are wines from the Pomerol area. Best known is Pomerol Petrus.

I like Pinot Noir. Meiomi and La Crema are decent for the money, but if you are looking to spend up to 50 bucks then you can get much better. Maybe start out with less expensive ones and see what your palate is. I don't buy 50 dollar bottles often enough to know much about them.

Niffla, you could get some really good wine at about the $50 mark. Hell, you could get two pretty good bottles at $25 and start exploring wine more. Seeing as you're in Texas, my guess is something like BevMo! is going to have the most diverse selection, but I could be wrong. If you're in or near a larger city there are probably some specialty wine stores that could also help you out.
Thanks for the reminder. Been having too much beer and whiskey lately. Time to grab some nice reds for this weekend.

This is one of my favorite go to wines:
About $10 - $15 a bottle. Not too dry, not too sweet with a good fruity flavor.

There's no such thing as the best wine, because all wine is garbage.
Niffla should feel bad.
That said, I like reds, usually boxed. A small glass with a sausage Frittata is the way to go, makes for an excellent breakfast.

All wine is garbage, yet you drink boxed wines ?
white wine is usually garbage unless it has bubbles or is champagne.
50$ I guess would purchase a good wine of any flavor, but could be something not that good as well

No, you drink boxed wine.
$50 is way too much money even for a decent wine, you can find really nice bottles of wine for like $8. $20 will get you something fairly exceptional, and $50, well you are just paying for something decadent but not really superior.
But it's meaningless when you drink your wine by boofing it, isn't it?

I'd argue you get a superior product for the higher end wines/vintages, but the line between taste and cost isn't linear. There are $50 bottles that exceed every $20 bottle, and there are $20 dollar bottles that exceed many $50 bottles. Not all wines at a specific price point are created equal.
