Yep. When the puddle froze it expanded and froze the pine needles on top. As it melted it left the cracking melting needles resting about an inch above the puddle to give me that cool pic
I tried to get pics to share last year of sticks that froze over a creek when the creek didn't freeze turning out dozens of tear drops of ice as the creek pulled the melting ice down but added to the ice on top... but my crummy phone couldn't pick them up.
Our rapid temperature fluctuations in winter is frustrating but they do give nature a chance to show how beautifully random it can be.
