I spawned this tub on 12/31 and it has been looking great until today. I have left it alone except for about 3 days ago I blotted the excess water on the surface with a rolled up paper towel. Any thoughts on if i should toss it and if so how to prevent it in the future? Thanks!

I've run into the same problem with 2 of my tubs now. I read it could be cut out so I tried. Sprayed some H2O2 then scooped it out seemed to work for 1 tub but the other has it everywhere so garbaging that one. But cant figure out why i got it in 2 tubs. Both were same strain of LGT and only 2 tubs out of 10 did it. So now I'm curious.

Yeah Id really like to figure out why it happened. My grain spawn was clean and it was colonizing the tub great until yesterday. Im wonder if it happened because I used paper towel to dab the excess water. Although I have done that in the past and nothing happened to the tub. Also, this is a lighter looking color than other mold ive seen.

Definitely trich.
So trich is the product of compromised spawn, or in the case of a casing layer, or manure based substrate: improper pasteurization can also play a role.
It takes a very discerning eye to spot compromised spawn, especially in the beginning. Your spawn can smell decent and still be contaminated. Some of the things that I look for in my spawn is:
1. Colour and consistency. Is it an absurd colour of white, does it have bright white splotches, or very pronounced, spiderweb like rhizomorphic tendrils, or have a thick ice cream like consistency;
2. Does it run on the slow side or have slow recovery. If I don't see fuzzy grains in 18 to 24 hours I'm very suspicious;
3. Is it hard as fuck to shake the grains apart during the shake? Like, do you have to smash that jar sobhard that it almost hurts your hand? If it's that tenacious then it's not likely good, at least for cubes;
4. Do my jars look overly wet with lot's of interior condensation, some condensation is ok, its just an indication that its warmer inside the jar than the outside of the jar and is to be expected due to the presence of a living organism. Heavy condensation however can be an indication of bacterial activity;
5. The above is often accompanied by uncolonized, wet looking individual grains dispersed throughout your jar or bag, often times pushed up against the glass or plastic. These grains are often accompanied with the super white ice cream like mycelium as well.
Sometimes you will have groups of grains that have been avoided by the mycelium, they sit untouched no matter how long you wait.
If any of those things are off I don't even bother with it, I just toss it and save myself the headache. I always have lots of spawn to fuck with anyways so it's not a big deal, I suggest that you keep enough going that it doesn't matter too much.
Your spawn should be easy to shake, should be uniform in colour and consistency, fully colonized and lastly it should smell good at spawning.

Np man. Start paying close attention to the differences in the appearance of your spawn and how it correlates to performance, take notes if necessary. Pretty soon you'll have ninja eyes for shitty spawn.
