The next thing to buy
    #27145347 - 01/13/21 08:36 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

We all know with this hobby you can spend a lot of doe. Once we have basics there is still stuff to buy. So anyone post a idea about your current or future buys equipment only please. List them in order from what you call most important to the least.

Also feel free to ask feedback as to how you ordered your list. This may help current and future growers out there decide what is most important in this lobby.

#1. All American Model #50 25 Qt. Electric Sterilizer
#2. Laminar flow hood
#3. Microscope

Thats mine for now just not sure what is most important i do have a pc but its killing my stove

you can fit twice as much in the AA 930.

Microscopes are awesome. It really helps to be able to look up close at what is happening. I see people here all the time misidentifying things they think are contaminates. Many of the things people call "mold" are just weird mycelium patterns caused by colonies separating and becoming competitive with each other. It also helps to find actual mold and bacteria and such. No more waiting for days or weeks to "assume" your culture is clean.

The HEPA filter you want is not a "hood". Hoods are mostly used for chemistry and delicate electrical work...

1) Presto 23qt PC because I'm sick of half pints in my 6qt.
2) Quart jars to go along with new PC.
3) Rye because I then will no longer have to fuck around with rice in small jars in 4 different pots on my stove.
4) Light malt extract. I still have some here but moisture came in and it turned into a solid block. It's still good, just a bitch to get out.

What's holding back #1 is the fact that I'm in Europe and it will cost me about 200€ to get it here.

As soon as I find the house that I want I'm going to make or buy a flowhood.

That's really the only thing I need, but right now I lack the space for one.

I always though flow hoods were the standard in mush cult. Are FFUs the way to go then? I have neither but would hate to spend money on the wrong equipment.

Do you find 1000X is good for identify such things. I heard the more the zoom makes it harder to focus so 2000x not sure.

Now that I think about it I have never read this anywhere but I have always assumed that just like telescopes and lenses, microscope have a Useful Magnification Limit that is dependent aperture and lens focal length. Telescopes are what I know so to put it in those terms: highest useful mag is aperture (mm)x2. As the focal length of your eyepiece decreases, magnifications increases exponentially and brightness decreases proportionally. There is also a min mag limit where the exit pupil is larger than either the camera sensor or the pupil of the eye that is viewing. Once you hit your useful mag limit, the bottom sorta drops out and the image turns to shit. Cheap telescopes sucker in buyer every day by advertising "up 5000x magnification" or some shit like that without mentioning (and buyers not knowing) that the limit for that scope is 1/5 of what is advertised.
Again, I don't know for sure that microscopes have similar limits but I would be surprised if they did not. And if they do, then I would be wary of any scope that uses magnification values as it's main selling point.

The microscope wish got me thinking. I actually own both a stereo microscope and a compound microscope and have never actually used either to look at a slide of spores, lol.

I mean, I love learning so I was happy to get a microscope regardless but in a hobby that tiptoes around the "microscopy use only" line I feel like one should the very least own a microscope. Will that make or break a potential conviction? probably not. But couldn't hurt.
Besides there are lots of cool things to look at outside mush cult.

#1 - More tubs and jars
#2 - Bigger dehydrator
#3 - Flowhood (or, likely because of my budget a much larger SAB)

I'm about to spawn my first grow so I'm still a complete noob but I already know that with the amount of plates I'm working on I'll need more jars/tubs, which also means my dehydrator isn't going to be sufficient even if I get sub-par yields. Flowhood would be SO nice to have, but even a SAB big enough to comfortably do g2g would be an upgrade.

#4 - better lighting. There's no excuse for this one, I already have the fluorescent ballast, I just need to go buy the lights

What kind of specs should one look for in a microscope. I've not touched one since I was a school kid. I wouldn't know where to start. Examples?

I have an FFU and I wouldn't say it's the "way to go", but I also wouldn't say it's not.

There are build quality tradeoffs, but I have grown lots of mush with my flimsy FFU no problems.

I thought a microscope would be cool been a long time since I used one. I am not getting anything fancy just a basic microscope is all i am thinking about.

how much propane you go through just on a 2 hour cycle? Also what do you need 1600 btu to run a cycle?

Flowhood would be on the very top of my list above a new pressure cooker (and better dehydrator like bigfoot mentioned) if it were me. It was and still is the single best thing I have ever invested in with this hobby.

Just a heads up. If using a presto PC, there is a warning in the manual not to use LP burners above 1200btu. Using propane is totally fine but don't crank it too high for too long or you run the risk of weakening the bottom and potential failure.

It’s hard to say how much I go through per cycle, but I have a 20 lb tank and I’ve had to refill it twice over the last 3-4 months, using it quite a bit for PC cycles, grain prep, and beer brewing. It’s great for brewing because you can regulate the temp so much easier!

Also, I’m not sure on how many BTUs are getting used...

the hepa filter is not the hood, but a piece of it. you're (likely) thinking of a "fume" hood. flow hood or cabinet are used in culturing bacteria or fungi.
