@ faht, Have you done just straight coir without verm with good results before? Or never tried it? That is a little concerning knowing there is dirty verm out there.. Does this mean pasteurizing mixed coir & verm as well lol? :goat:

I don’t want to scare anyone that’s having success not boiling.. it was years ago when we were casing with straight verm.  I haven’t used non-heat treated verm in years so I don’t have anything to compare it to recently and like I said, it’s for my own anxieties, But it’s something to think about.

I haven’t done straight coir but I’ve definitely considered it.. ppl say it works great

What do you use for spawn with this method? and do you add ANY gypsum? I'm confused as to where the nutrients for the mushroom are?

Dozens of growers on this site have run side-by-side grows that all came to the same conclusion, Gypsum does not provide any benefits to a shrooms growth. its only use seems to be helping to prevent clumping in overly hydrated grains.
any properly prepped and colonized grain can be used as spawn, your grain will provide ALL of the nutrients needed for the complete growth cycle.....from spore germination to fruiting and spore drop. the substrate should be non-nutritive, its main purpose is to provide water.

I have 2 slow cookers that I pasteurize in. Both hold a 650g brick of coir+2 quarts of verm if needed to get to field capacity. I also keep 1 pasteurized brick+verm in a myco bag for top layers for a few weeks depending on my rotation.

So.. Hydrate 1 brick coir in a stock pot with 3 liters hot water for a day or so. When expanded add desired amount of verm to reach field capacity. Pasteurize in slow cooker @160F for whatever time suits your needs. I'm usually 3 hours and mix with spawn within 1-2 days. So at any given time I have 3 bricks of coir prepped for 2 mono's + a top layer. If I want to plan ahead or the schedule gets screwed up I can freeze a myco bag until needed.

You don't pasteurize at 170 or higher? seems sus to me but if it works for you no need to scare.

That's so interesting to me, Just the grains and maybe some LME does pretty much all the work huh? I'm just looking to grow QUALITY... and QUANTITY soo I'm trying out a few different things to attempt to get the best of the best. Going to try to isolate a few different "genetics" I believe its called, in agar. Then once I transfer those a few times go for different grain/spawn types with different nutrient mixes and see what happens. Anyone had good results using coffee? grounds or just brewed?

I store my coir in the tubs I made it in with warm tap water until I use it then I make more. No need to pasteurize or sterilize coir, never had a single issue. All my tub contams set in well after 100% BE.

I hate to go BACK to this now.. But I'm starting to understand it. What you're saying is your tubs don't get any type of contam on them using JUST unpasteurized coir as sub, until you've gotten at least your substrates weight worth of fresh mushrooms out of the tub. So your contams don't even start until you're halfway done fruiting. Correct?

Ps to everyone on this thread I love you very much and hope your new year gives you all the things you deserve.
