Has anyone delivered newspapers as a job?

I found this lady on Craigslist looking for contractors to do paper routes at night (like 2am-5am) in my car. Has anyone delivered papers as a job? What is it like? I'm meeting her tonight at 2am and will be starting.

its exactly what it sounds like. you get a list of addresses and promptly deliver the papers. odd thing these days, newspapers. feels kind of foolish to keep printing waste when everybody and their grandmother uses the internet.

Yes I delivered the Washington Post for a few years in high school. The business is pretty different now I’m sure. Back in the 80s most people had a subscription so a route was literally just my neigborhood, about 100 houses.
The worst part about the job was collecting money.

Papers are pretty dead. This has to be a terrible job.

I would say a majority of people in my neighborhood still get the paper every morning

I got a signed letter and plaque from Katherine Graham somewhere thanking the deliverers for working through the blizzard of 86
Everyone I’ve known who has worked for the washington post from delivery people to reporters all say the company is really good to its employees

There isn’t a single paper delivered in my neighborhood. There’s only two print papers left in Pittsburgh. One is free, the other is so bad it needs to go out of business.

Yeah I’d say the Post and NYT are in a pretty unique position with increasing numbers of subscribers and profitable

I delivered for USA Today, had to pick up these giant stacks and take them to gas stations with those kiosks. I kept the change (not much) and had to bring it to a bank, that's how I got paid. A few residents actually subscribed, I didn't get any money from them. The worst part was having 1,000s of newspapers that didn't sell stacked up in my apartment waiting for trash day. I quit after a couple months, all that weight was hard on my car too.

The shitty local papers here have this crazy business model where they default to delivering the paper to everyone even if they don't want it, and the kids who deliver them don't get paid anything by the company, just from trying to collect money from people for a paper they never asked for. Should be illegal for the company to exploit them like that.

The epoch times tried that for a while. So did the Washington examiner and the Washington Times.

I see it as exploiting child labor. But they have it structured so that the kids "have their own business" and are not employees of the paper.
