Will The Left Turn On Biden?
    #27141202 - 01/11/21 03:15 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I’m in Georgia, so the election BS has been nonstop. I didn’t like or support any of the candidates in our senate election. The Republicans promised nothing other than they weren’t Osoff or Warnock. I doubt anybody actually voted for them, rather people just for or against Warnock/Osoff. Warnock and/or Osoff have all but promised that if they get elected they will see to it that all student loans will be forgiven, healthcare will be reformed, and everybody gets a $2000 check. Now that they have won, what happens if these things don’t happen? So far everybody hates Trump and straight white men so much that they all are united, but once Trump is gone and is not the main focus will they still be united? Will muslims change their their beliefs to support LGBT? Will blacks and Hispanic immigrants still get along? Will Biden allow the migrant caravans that are coming now to walk across the border while American citizens are told to close their businesses and stay home? Will he be called a racist if he doesn’t allow them in? Now that the single point of unity (hatred of Trump) is nearly gone, what’s going to unite these people, or will conflict break out among them resulting in more protests across the country? The precedent was set in 2020 that rioting, looting, and property destruction are totally acceptable forms of protest, there’s no reason to believe that it won’t continue with Biden as president. Will Biden support this? Will he be a racist if he doesn’t? Biden wants to take our guns, but will he take BLMs/NFAC’s guns too?

I agree that healthcare is a totally fucked up mess and needs to be reformed, but do they have a means of doing it? I also agree that fossil fuels need to go, but does AOC have a plan other than to dismantle the oil companies? I’m expecting gas prices to go up dramatically, which would be fine if the money was put towards developing and providing alternatives, but will they do that or will they spend it on other progressive ideas such as fighting for LGBT rights in other countries, trying to close the wealth gap between the US and third world countries, or paying slavery reparations? The smart move for all of us would be to get electric cars sooner than later, but how many people can do that? How many people of color or immigrants can sell their cheap old car and move to a new electric car? All of these things sound great in theory but I don’t hear much about how to make it actually happen. I think the next four years might be as much of a shit show as the past four years and I wonder if support for Biden will continue or not.

With trump effectively silenced Biden's support will diminish as the majority of people voted for him because they hate trump. The left won't turn on him but the people will not support him.

You're just confused because you just saw four years of blind allegiance and faith in your cult leader.  That isn't normal.  Normally, people judge a President on each individual issue/action.  You'll get used to it over time.

im not confused about a thing its simple the left wants people to do what they say an if they dont agree they attack them or cancel them. If Biden dose not play ball with them it will get ugly really fast. They can care less he is president they just want him to play ball an push there looney ideas. Half of these people on the left should be in nut house.

If Biden doesn't do what the voters want, they will vote him out.  That's the way our system works.  I realize you think that storming the capitol is standard practice for butthurt losers, but it really isn't.  Typically, Americans work within the system.

Biden has already turned on the progressives, so what choice do they have other than calling out Biden and his hypocrisy?

I don't think 'turn' applies here, the left already dislikes Biden... the only people painting him as a socialist hero are Trumpers

From a policy perspective, Biden and Trump are essentially identical.

Voting for Biden was voting for a pause of Trump's lunacy.  If there was a viable candidate to reverse Trump's lunacy, he/she would have been voted in.  Biden was the best we could do under the circumstances.

The left will no doubt become frequently critical of Biden when Trump is no longer around catch all the hostility of the Democratic Party. Before the Georgia Senate runoff it looked like Mitch would still be around to blame. Now we will have no one to blame but each other.

But the left will not "turn on Biden" with the vitriol and irrationality that the GOP has been engaging in.

'The left' encompasses a variety of factions and viewpoints, but the general consensus since the election has been "We're willing to vote for Biden to get Trump out, but on day 1 we will be opposing him and demanding positive change"

No, I don't think the left is going to "turn" on Biden.

"The left's" biggest weakness right now is that we are so divided amongst ourselves that we can't unify ourselves on a common cause. For example, my parents and I are both "lefties". However, I tend more towards the extreme left (anarchism) while my parents would be best classified as neo-liberals. We are both on "the left," but when you get down to the details of politics, we couldn't disagree more.

For example: I believe healthcare should be universal, the same way that our taxes provide universal coverage in the forms of firefighters or police officers. My parents believe that the best way to address healthcare is with a compromise between universal and private healthcare, where people can opt-in or opt-out. Basically, they think Obamacare was a good idea (whereas I think it was a bad idea because it wasn't left-leaning enough).

My parents believe Joe Biden was the best Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. They love Kamala Harris and Biden because they love anything that isn't Trump. I think Biden was a terrible choice. I think he has a track record of racial insensitivity, he helped draft the "tough on crime" bill in the 90's with Hillary Clinton, which largely contributed to the mass incarceration we're experiencing today, I think his choice of Kamala Harris was extremely insensitive to the demands of the leftist BLM protests (considering that she was a state prosecutor and consistently advocated for incarceration for minor drug offenses). I don't like Joe Biden, and when I found out that he won the Democratic nomination, my heart sank down to my stomach. My favorite Democratic candidate in 2020 was Bernie Sanders. My parents strongly disagree with me about this.

I hope this helps you understand some more details about the way that "the left" is divided against itself. We are not unified at all politically, yet our lovely two-party system forces us all into the same box. I dragged my feet to the polls and voted for Joe Biden, but I'm not happy about it at all. I saw him as the lesser of two evils, and I think it's extremely fucked up that the lesser of two evils is the best we can do right now, instead of producing a candidate that we can all take pride in.

So, to answer your original question: no, the left isn't going to "turn" on Biden because a large percentage of the left never liked Biden to begin with. I'm a leftist, and I never liked him, really. My criticism of Biden is pretty similar to my criticism of Obama (perhaps unsurprisingly - after all, Biden was Obama's VP): he's not left-leaning enough to lead us towards any meaningful change. I think the best thing we can hope for from Biden is stuff like Obamacare: weak, socialist-flavored compromises that are vulnerable to Republican obstructionism.

I don't think voting Democrat makes someone automatically on The Left. Maybe 1/3 of Democratic voters are progressives and the rest are centrists that could very easily vote Republican. Anyone who truly embraces Biden and Harris are not on The Left or progressives, they're centrists and pretty conservatives in nature. The bottom line is that neo-liberals are not The Left, they're essentially on The Right.
