How's it going over there? Haven't heard much about you guys. Having recently gone into lockdown myself over a 'UK variant' doesn't bode well. You alright?

Hi Primal
It is not too bad, all in all, but I live in the countryside of the UK, maybe if I lived in London or Manchester I'd have a different story to tell.
We are vaccinating at a good rate. Around 2.5 million done at the last count and doing around 200k a day, albeit only one of the two required doses.
Really too soon to call, what I can tell you is the elderly population here give no fucks. Most people are doing their best to abide by it, the odd rave aside, but every single day I go to do my horse and drive through our little town I see all the Grannies and Grandads wandering around, stopping to chat to each other, ludicrous.
Thanks for asking, people forget about our humble little island

Aye, I see more elderly about in public than anyone else, even during a three day lockdown. Completely bizarre.
Vaccinations sounds good, I haven't heard anything about vaccinations here but I'm not actually paying a lot of attention. Are your hospitals holding up?
I've just looked up the QLD stats;
Queensland COVID-19 statistics Last updated: Midday 14 January 2021
4 New cases (last 24h) 1,287 Total cases 1,655,271 Total tests 6 Total lives lost

I know it's madness isn't it.
The first lockdown here in March everywhere was a ghost town for maybe 2 weeks, then people got bored and started taking liberties.
Wow see that is low, compared to the numbers here, I think we are having 1.5k deaths per day across the country, although there is talk that the rates are flattening again, who knows what's true though, the stories and advice fluctuate daily, well they do in the UK anyway.
As for hospitals, they say they are at 200 per cent capacity, so double the usual number of beds present and occupied than usual, I have heard first hand how tough it is at the moment, but I don't think the health service here is close to buckling just yet.

That's a lot of deaths, I would think that would have to be representative of the pressure on the hospitals. But I can imagine the news and stories would be in shambles too. I remember two episodes of QI were aired without an audience, that was interesting.

It could well be, but then a lot of those are people with preexisting conditions that cause a weakened immune system, or are of advanced age I.e it is my understanding that these people would unfortunately not pull through even if there were empty beds, as far as I've seen there is no trouble getting people into wards, or getting them the care they need, but the virus gets them in the end anyway.
We have a family member hospitalised with COVID at the moment, she is receiving treatment but we have been advised that due to her age, and her having had cancer in the past, that she is unlikely to pull through. Its not due to pressure at the hospital, or a lack of equipment, staff or time, but to do with the culmination of factors that mean her recovery is unlikely.
I have heard that earlier this week several drugs though to be able to alay the mortality rate/improve recovery rate in the most vulnerable have been approved, but as to the rollout, efficacy and availability of these drug based treatments I am unsure.
Again I must impress that I am country folk, so this is based on our humble little area. If I lived in London I may well hear more horror stories etc, but given the first hand evidence I can be sure of such as people I know working in our local hospital, and our experience with this family member I can only state that for now, in my county at least, the heath service may well be at capacity and then some but for now at least it is short of a national crisis/complete collapse
