Don't know too much about them, but they ARE active, just very weak. I'm pretty sure they're safe, but don't quote me. Also they are meant to taste horrendous.

The general consensus is don't bother, because of how weak they are.

the chances of correctly identifying this species are so so and unless you have done so many times do not eat any you find and suspect, even if you note a color change and are totally sure of yourself. This is not a starter mushroom for tripping newbs. Some are very active compared to others to answer your question- they taste like- um- nasty in a blanket and can cause liver problems most definately- esp. accumulatively over the course of several doses. Better than subbs but not for the uninformed.

HI Shroomie of Doomie,

You promised to try to not spread any more misinformation.

I would like to point out a correction for you in your statement about the young women who ate the Gymnopilus spectabilis (syn=Pholiota spectabils).

You said above:
Quote:

"One lady once said on her way to the hospital (and this is quoted from David Aroras 'Mushrooms Demystified') "If this is the way you die from mushroom poisoning, then im all for it..."

Well the lady in the above quote accidently consumed specimens of Pholiota (G.) spectabilis. Not G. purpuratus.
I have eaten G. purpuratus from germany on several ocassions with no ill effects, although the shroom is nowhere as bitter as G. spectabilis is.

Now a few other points.

David Aurora's quote is also incorrect.

Here is the reference to the article by Walters which is what Arora referenced his comment from.

Walters, M. B. 1965. Pholiota spectabilis, an hallucinogenic mushroom. Mycologia vol. 57:837-838.
A report of an intoxication in Ohio caused by the accidental ingestion of a species of Gymnopilus.

And here is a brief account of that incident.

A young woman in Clevekland, Ohio accidently ingested some specimens of Phoiota (Gymnopilus) spectabilis.

Her statement was not made on the way to the hospital as you noted that David Arora said so. A the following comments were written by Dr. Walters who wrote the subsequent article in the prestigeous shroom journal, Mycologia after talking on the telephone with n her. Not on the way to the hospital..

"A young woman in Cleveland Ohio gave this personal account of "glorius brilliant colors and music," after ingesting Pholiota spectabilis. She also reported, "no feelings of discomfort whatsoever," the young lady added that, "If this were the way one died of mushroom poisoning, she was all for it."

The statement by the lady was as I wrote it above.

Not "If this is the way you die."

Arora was incorrect in his quote and about the hospital.

I find it interesting how others can contort and distort the meaning of what someone says.

So I have decided to post here the original article about this case study for you to read.

Anyway, this was about G. purpuratus, not G. spectabilis.

mj

I was going to say the same thing, mj.

Gymnopilus's are hard to identify since they have so many nasty look alikes. Also the awful taste and the potency makes them not worth picking them.

Let them grow into big shrooms.
