This is what I went with. Cheapest 99.99% efficiency one I could find new. Shipping is additional too so all in you’re at about $250.
Add a blower in and supplies you’re at least adding another $300 to the build. $550-$600 beats buying a prebuilt one, but your time is worth money too.
I liked the idea of doing the project myself and saving a few hundred. If you’re not not looking forward to the build, there might be other options like fan filter units for example.

I just ordered this same filter. How has it been working for you? I'm still waiting on mine to arrive. I think that's the biggest drawback to this company is the slow shipping time. How long did yours take to arrive?

Haha I am waiting on it too. Hasn’t been too long since I placed the order though. It says it can take up to 3 weeks to ship.
Other companies I found with similar filters were slightly more expensive and had the same turnaround time.
I’m a little worried about a fragile filter getting shipped, but the customer service is supposed to be very good if there are issues.
What blower are you pairing it with?

While you are waiting for your filters to come in, call up some of your local hvac crews. Ask if they have any furnaces theyre replacing and can you have the old one? the blowers are FREEEEEEEEE!!! they are usually awesome and over sized. just block off parts of the intake until you get the correct flow rate. No harm done. save you couple hundred bucks

Some big ass squirrel cage blowers on furnaces, so be aware in case space is limited.

So much this, I built my flowhood doing exactly that. My blower is 2x larger then necessary, covered one whole side of my intake to get the flow just right. If space isn't an issue, go for a freebie furnace blower.

I'm taking a chance and going with an inline duct fan.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/AmeriFan-Duct-Booster-10-in-x-8-in-Exhaust-Growing-Hydroponics-Heating-Cooling-Venting-HVAC-Steel-120-Volt-AIF8/308439013
I ordered a kit from Amazon that includes a rheostat controller.
I believe this fan is tjerlund's answer to the M-series inline fans that they have on their site, but that they discontinued due to amazon out selling them. The m series was made in China, but supposedly this one is built but them in the USA hence the name, AmeriFan.
The specsheet is nowhere to be found online but I called tjerlund and spoke to tech support.
This fan will move over 400CFM at 1" sp, and over 500cfm at .75" sp. The filter that we both orders is .79" sp, so it will have to be turned down but should work.
What are you going with?

Same here, one side is totally covered and the other side is 50% covered. my blower is way too big for this 12X24 filter but ive been using it blocked off for ~5 years now.

Wow thanks for giving them a call and sorting out those specs. Definitely very intrigued by this inline fan/filter combo.
That looks very similar to a fan from a Flow Hood Tek I saw from someone across the pond.

carfeul that is a lot to be restricting on a blower the restrict ability is not infinite before excessive heat hurt something inside. do you run it for 3 or 4 days straight here and there?
if you hunt ebay there can be some cheap ones.

You're correct if you're motor is centered inside the motor and requires the throughflow of the air to cool it. If that's the case, make sure it is indeed cooled.
In my case it's belt driven motor on the outside, which causes no extra heat. I do have an additional fan on my motor though, since it's not in the original furnace setting which forces air to blow over it anyway.

it causes me great happiness imagining your set up. I even have a conceptual drawing of a v8 covertte engine powering your flow hood in my mind where the filter is bulging. it causes some extra heat as the impeller has to work harder to pump the air right? Like you said proably negligible with only half blocked with that kind of setup, Even if you block the whole thing it will definitely have a pretty hard load but dunno if motor would be like i got this for 7days weeks months or years. Years i hope Nice though! beats the pants off a sab noise mouse wheel pulleys belts ect love it! Can we see a pic please?!?! DDDDD

Hmm i never thought much about the airflow acting as a cooling agent for the motor. I dont usually run it for longer than 3 or 4 hours, even then i have not noticed any heat when i touch the motor (mine is centered inside the blower and not belt driven). The only time i had excessive heating is during the fires last year, we had so much smoke in our area that i was letting the fan run wide open to filter the air in our living space. The fan had a hard time blowing through a small filter and got warm.
as far as i know the more restriction you put on the incoming air the smaller the load is on the motor. the fan speed wont really change but the load on the motor will decrease (also probably heat generated will decrease). when you restrict outgoing air you are putting a harder load on the fan and will make it heat up.
