going from the pf tek after u mix your verm and brf i was told to cap off the jars with some dry verm. i been doing this for a long time and i seem to get a 40% contam rate. i was wondering how i could fix this as i seen so many times with my jars alot of the time the contam starts from the verm layer ontop of the cake, so i did this batch with no verm layer and i have hardly no contam. this is my first time doing this mabe i got lucky or sumtin but i would like to hear your info. what u guys do, do u use the verm or not?

pressure cook em and you wont have a prob. i use the verm layer and to date have only had 3 comtams

you got lucky... the probable reason for your contam problem is either your vermiculite layer isn't thick enough or the spore load in the space you keep your jars is way too high...
I would advise you clean house, get rid of any obvious sources of contams, and make sure your verm layer is at least a half inch thick...
after your jars are innoculated, keep them in a closed space like a closet or a drawer, even a cardboard box, and spray lysol into it before you close it... once that space is closed, keep it closed, open it only to check your jars, and don't check them more often than once a day...
when checking your jars, be very careful not to flex the lids, since any pressure on the lids will create a bellows effect and suck air into the jars...

i always pressure cook em and i electric tape the holes after i inject the syringe and i even do all this infront of a flow hood

i use half pint jars and from the line where the cap screw on all the way up i usully make the verm that thick i use big rubber maid totes and spray it down with alchol and to top all that off i put each jar after i tape it in a ziplock baggy, i guess cause in theroy if 1 jar leaks contam the rest wouldnt get it but i was still getting a pretty high contam level

srry i made like 5 posts now i think bout it i could be injecting way to many spores in there i do like 1 syringe into 3 jars 4 injection points for each jar i do this cause my jars are done in a week

i do the same and still never have contams. clean out your incubator and dont put tape back over the holes, it may have contams

make sure there is NO extra substrate on the edges, it acts as a wick for contams to ruin the whole thing make there is no extra substrate on the glass where the verm goes, but i would stick with the verm

so should i cover the jars with tin foil or leave the holes open and jus throw them in a baggy? i have done that befor but i got so much condensation inside each bag

just leave em open and free. clean your incubator with bleach and water and let it sit for a day, then just leave em in there with the holes open and you shouldnt have any probs.

ok i will do that thanks alot i was killing my self thrying to figure out y i have such a high contam rate and i thought i was doing everything possable to prevent it i bet its the tape tho.

Sorry to hijack this thread but doesn't contaminated air get into the incubator every time it is opened? Should it perhaps be sprayed with a bit with lysol when it is opened?

Be careful with the lysol it causes some funny mutants I hear......... I do pf tek all the time.. Very few contams I had 1/12 pint jars contam. No tape, use aluminum foil. Make damn sure you clean the area you are going to innoculate in. Sterlize your syringes.
If you use lysol wait 10-20 mins for it to settle before you expose anything.
and lastly, dont check your jars every fucking day. Leave the goddamn things be for christ sakes!! lmfao...... hehehe. Sory I am drunk but seriously you need to have some patience if you take them out every day they are going to contam. Also germ-x is great stuff less than a buck at wally world.
I just remembered, make sure your substratre is FIELD capacity. Meaning if you squeeze it it feels moist but onyl a few droplets of water fall out. Otherwise it is too fuckng wet and it will contam before it colonizes.

that tape probably does more harm than good... you have to apply the tape with your finger, the sticky surface attracts microbes from your finger, and traps them right in the entrance to your jars... just cover the lids with foil, that will work much better than the tape

Looking back at your first post, and assuming that the contam is related to using verm, it may be the batch of verm your using is contaminated.
How about pre heating the oven to it's max. temp. and puting the verm in for 30 mins, letting it cool, and then using it to top off your jars? Might be worth a try.

I say ditch the dry verm layer and either use coffee filters held on with an elastic(I"ve done this many times and had great success) or use polyfil or tyvek...the dry verm layer probably absorbs water from the substrate(just a theory) and just takes up space where substrate could be anyways

I have never had this problem you speak of...I usually take my jars outta the pc RIGHT after the pressure is down enough...then just leave em out to cool down....I've never had a jar contam before innoculation...you SURE it wasn't a bad syringe?
EDIT: just like to add if you have a properly working filter on your jars the air being displaced should go through it and be clean

Maby just a coincidence, but I did 4 jars and covered with electric tape, all four went bad. Still trying to figure this out myself. first contams ive had. My other guess was the dry verm. will try it in the oven idea.
