How to store substrate? +Tips Thread!
    #27136830 - 01/09/21 05:01 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello friends!

I am here because I am wondering where/how to properly store my pasteurized substrate if I don't use all of it when layering my first monotub'(s)

Would a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and plastic wrap around the edge do?

How do you store unused substrate that's ready to use?

Also since this is my FIRST thread here on this seemingly legendary forum...
Id like to propose a general tips thread.
I am open to ANY good advice, tips growing techniques, or tek's to watch out for.
If this thread is in the wrong section, please direct me to the correct one; And thank you all in advance!

I store my coir in the tubs I made it in with warm tap water until I use it then I make more. No need to pasteurize or sterilize coir, never had a single issue. All my tub contams set in well after 100% BE.

Substrate [Re: Crackatoa]
    #27138927 - 01/10/21 02:38 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

My Substrate is a mix of vermiculite, gypsum and dehydrated horse manure however I did order a brick of coir just in case I felt like throwing some in or trying it in a different batch for comparison.

I'm not too worried about how long its good for, since I'll just use it up if I have extra; not scared of some extra work. I'm just scared of contam happening despite all of my psychotic efforts to try to maintain a sterile room environment.

You use ONLY coir as a sub? I'm confused; Why do you not feel the need to pasteurize/sterilize your substrate... also BE?

if there is just coir and verm store it in a bucket its last forever. If it has manure, straw, or other things that need pasteurizing then load it into bags and freeze it.

i freeze all my sub which is staw and horse manure. but if your only growin cubes there is absolutely no need for any straw ir nanure at all. a simple 50/50 coir verm sub prepped and stored as stated is just fine

For cubes, coir is perfect. No need to pasteurize coir works perfect just the way it is.

What do you use for spawn with this method? and do you add ANY gypsum? I'm confused as to where the nutrients for the mushroom are?

Dethaw technique?
Room temp and let it sit in a sterile environment like a box? or what? break up into chunks and use frozen? let dethaw in spawn box?

You don't need to use any gypsum, I do use verm though.

Read through Bods' Easy As Fuck TEKs (they're actually easy as fuck). This link covers everything from BRF cakes, agar, how to prep grain and coir, to harvesting. Well written, easy to follow with plenty of pictures. Don't store manure, even if it's been pasteurized. Use it or lose it. Cheers, mate

I don't care to play with shit, tried that didn't make a difference. Got better results from plain coir than coir verm and coir is easy af. Takes 5 minutes to prep and I get 10kg dry bricks for 16 bucks. BE 100% or better first flush. Spawn to fruit 7 to 10 days KSSS monoculture.

I really hope I don't get bashed for not knowing this already; but holy fuck.. big words.
What does BS stand for and KSSS?
I am beginning to understand what a monoculture is.. kind of.
Not asking for a fleshed out explanation; more like a link to a thread? or even just acronym standings, and a basic rundown?.

Here you go mate, your very own shroomery glossary! BE is defined in there (Biological Efficiency) and how to calculate it. Basically it's a way to see if you're getting everything out of a grow that you can, if that makes any sense..

KSSS is Koh Samui Super Strain. It's a variety of cubensis from Thailand. I used to know where there was a list of all the mushroom variety acronyms was but I've lost it...There's a shitload of them that I still don't know. Cheers, mate

Coir is much better for continual use.. I use to use straw/hpoo and coir is soooOooOooOoOo much easier and your house won’t smell like you’re cooking aged shit.. but to answer your original question, I wouldn’t store pasteurized manure in a sealed container.. just make sure there’s some gas exchange

Why risk all your hard work to not pasteurize though? Seems risky 2 me... some coir bricks come with trich ya know.  it has beneficial bacteria for plants

Fungi spores have difficulty germinating in coir however mycelium loves it so it makes an excellent substrate. Some peeps pasteurize, some don’t its personal preference. I will however say that it hydrates way more easily if you use hot or boiling water, and if you’re already going that far might as well pasteurize it. That’s my thinking anyway so I normally just end up doing the bucket tek and pasteurizing it that way.

For me, I’ve had a TON of bad experience with dirty verm.. at least that’s where I suspected the problem to come from, so adding boiling water to the CV is mainly to help me sleep at night and not worry that the verm is actually going to fack me over, not the coir.  Besides, I can wait the little extra time.. I can see how it’s be annoying to ppl cycling the shit out of tubs though.. if that were me, I’d probably give the warm water a shot but not worth my anxiety.. I usually bucket the night before anyway so wait times aren’t even an issue either way.
