Possible gymnopilus? NW Wa ID request
    #27126795 - 01/04/21 06:09 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Found this species about a month ago and meant to post an ID request but I never got to it. I misplaced the specimen I picked and didn’t take a print so that’s probably why. Just curious if anyone is able to identify this mushroom with these minimal pictures and information. It was growing in a well graveled area with a lot of scotch broom and old grass growing. I couldn’t tell you the log it’s growing from either I wish I had paid more attention.

Definitely gymnopilus something like luteofolius or a related species, good find!

Could be Gymnopilus thiersii or G. luteofolius or G. dilepis.

Right on:-), it really did strike me as a gymnopilus I don’t know what I was thinking not taking the specimen home more carefully to print. Oh well, there’s hope I can go back and check if there’s more flushing from the log. The weather here is being mad weird not wanting to get into freezing temps quite yet . We’ve had a couple frosts not heavy at all though. Super late winter coming through with some heavy ass rains. It may be a short winter but I think it will be intense when it does hit!

Went back to the spot and was blessed with a couple meaty specimens. Wouldn’t be totally surprised if it was the exact same fruits I left as babies a month or so ago. Should have gotten a better habitat pic but I took a picture of the log afterwards that it was fruiting off of. Same log as the before fruits so I guess it doesn’t matter all too much. Cheers, taking some spore prints now🤙

I think you need microscopy or sequencing to determine the species, unless there is very clear blue-green bruising, which means it's G. thiersii.

I appreciate the reply, there is some very distinct greenish bruising on the gill edge. I tried my best not to damage them but I did noticeably see a couple areas that were bruising green to my eye.

These look similar to G. Thiersii I found lately in Oregon. Actually just tried them yesterday, 2.5 grams and they were definitely active at that dose. I think you’ve got something here if you saw some green hue. I’d recommend 4-5 grams for a good mid level dose based on my experience

In the last picture on the bottom fruit is where you’re able to see the green staining easiest... for my eyes at least. Thanks for the response, was that taken cracker dry I’m assuming? They weighed out to just shy of 30 gs wet. The prints didn’t drop over night. Too much condensation. I might try and swab them if I’m not able to get a print.

Yep.
See the green now, my bet is it’s an active Gymnopilus probably Thiersii. I’m just a new guy though.
Yes cracker dry. General rule of thumb mushrooms are 90% water so they will equate to ~ 10% wet weight when dry. So your 30g wet may be around 2-4 g dried

Right on, welcome to shroomery! I’m fairly new as well this will be almost around a year since I’ve been on this site, and it’s been an awesome learning experience. Thanks for the info, I will definitely have to bioassay them when I get the chance. Would love to hear a little more about your experience... lower doses are the ticket for me when I do dose. So this species is very intriguing to me. And very beautiful! Cheers🤙

My experience was very interesting. Not like cubes or any other Psilocybe species I’ve tried. Like I said me and a buddy each had 2.5 grams. About 30 min later I started yawning (which happens whenever mushrooms kick in for me). I began to feel the familiar somewhat speedy feeling as I first started noticing the effects, but it subsided to a feeling of calm peace and sedation. Visuals were very mild. Me and my buddy were both extremely talkative, but slurring our words from the sedation, however my mind seemed pretty clear. How I would compare it is maybe 2 grams of cubes, but without much of any visuals, and a sense of sedation. Traditional trippy headspace was still there, just not as intense as cubes. I also experience zero come up anxiety or nausea which happens to me 99% of the time. They had a friendly funky feel to them, which I thoroughly enjoyed and found just as enjoyable as a low dose of cubes, if not more enjoyable. Very interested in seeing what a larger dose of this species provides!

Man that’s awesome thanks for the report! Sounds like a really interesting and spiritual mushroom I can’t wait to explore. When I do end up testing them I’ll report back with the experience😎. You’ve definitely intrigued me some more. Also, thanks doctorghosty for the positive confirmation🙏

No problemo. Definitely a very interesting mushroom! They’re just so funky and different compared to your regular old Psilocybes. Just the look of these things is intoxicating! Can’t wait to hear how they treat ya.

Found some waterlogged to the max gymns today in the same area. Different log but the same species of wood. Pretty positive on them being theirsii it’s just debatable on whether one would try to eat them after drying. No foul rotting smell just they’re waterlogged to the max. Soggy boys. I may try and dehydrate them to see how they end up but what would you fellas suggest? If they’re too far gone and unsafe I plan on making some spore slurry from them.

Dont eat those bud, if you wanna do something useful place them in little cardboard sandwiches and see if you can get some myc started so you can make a patch.

So is the consensus that waterlogged mushrooms are just unsafe in general to eat?...or it’s just too much of a risk with rott to be able to tell? Sounds like a plan though better safe than sorry and they are pretty sorry looking. I’ll do my best to start a ghetto patch with them in cardboard and chips.🤙thanks

Waterlogged mushrooms are cool. Mushrooms are 90% water.... decomposing mushrooms are no bueno. These look like decomposing mushrooms to me.
