Cordyceps militaris In a shoebox pics
    #27101414 - 12/21/20 06:41 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone interested in fruiting Cordyceps? I woke up today to find several small orange pins in my shoebox! Lots can still go wrong but here’s what I did so far...

1.) Agar to Grain
2.) grain to substrate
3.) substrate plus spawn added as very thin layer into shoebox.
4,) shoebox sat closed since 12/15
5.) 12 hours light per day currently

Grain: sorghum (always for me)
Substrate: same as pan cyan/pan tamp/cube: 55 manure/5worm casting/20 coco/15V/5G plus a few handfuls of my New secret weapon which is a nearly

3 years old Organic soil compost mix for my cannabis that sits in a bin in my house.  The organic Soil has been reused constantly so it has root pieces and leaf matter also. I had a spore syringe germinate directly onto my soil in that bin(long story on why) so I figured I’d add those organisms before pasteurizing. The soil smells very earthy after pasteurizing.

I was going to fruit these from grain but I haven’t seen many grows at all on other substrates, haven’t seen many Cordy grows Period... my point being, i really didn’t expect much.

But this morning... PINSSS!???? After how many days!!!? 6 days. Wtf? If I get half a flush I’ll be happy bc I did not think this would work out. On top of it my PC has been busy so my last ten subs have been oven pasteurized. My cyan, tamps, and cubes have all been colonizing greatly thank fuck!  Maybe it’s the weed soil eh? ; )

http://http://

The cordy sub doesn’t look colonized but I assure you it’s one big mass of greatness. I didn’t even introduce to fruiting conditions.

Sorry if teh post is too long I HATE WORDPAPERS myself!!!111one

So i have done a-lot of Manure out of the bags in my day.
I have gotten these things pop up a few times.

(kinda hard to see) lil orange fungo type things. When they pop up they only last a day or two and then after  the flush of actual mushrooms is usually large.

I thought you could only grow these off grain and broth.

I have never seen those even in my potted plants! Please get more/better pics if you can. I am growing Cordyceps militaris def on purpose, no other mushroom in there. They have a sort of spiky tip and your invader shrooms look rather blunt on the tip.

I’ve seen way too many people on here get results trying something new. Also I learned that Cordyceps do not only grow directly from bugs in nature. They grow in rich compost just like any other mushroom. Again my yield will probably be horrible but so far I have reishi and oyster shoeboxes that both worked great, so I’m not totally unhopeful.

I will try just spreading out grains into my next box and see if yield improves but the fact that they fruited in 6 days when I’ve heard people having so much trouble with these mushrooms taking awhile to fruit on grains in jars tells me we did not have our facts spot on about these wonderful fungi.

How are you prepping your rye?  What kind of “bad time”?  Ryes pretty easy.. bring to boil, reduce to simmer for 30 mins.. strain.  If it’s contamination, I don’t think the grain is going to matter.

Even if I did rye, which I have in the past I’d do it the same way. Best results for me, and i use dirty Ass organic animal feed sorghum is:
1) soak grains for 16-24 hours to germinate bacterial endospores
2) using the exact same water and pot I soaked in I bring the pot to a boil(make sure you have plenty of water like triple the water at least)
3)once the pot just starts to boil I start my timer for 30 minutes(it never gets to thirty minutes that’s a ballpark, 20-25 minutes seems to get the moisture right.
4) strain and immediately put into a large pan and allow the steam to dry the water left on the grains for at least an hour but once completely cooled
5) load into jars( I fill G2G jars halfway and agar to grain a little more with grain)
6) I PC for 2 hours plus 20 minutes I fill the water halfway up the jars in the PC or they’ll burn and carmelize(useless for mycology)

A note on moisture:
The grains should fluff up A BIT. But NOT BURST. You want the grains to have water but not be saturated, I think 30% moisture...it’ll take practice. If your jars colonize and you get big pools of clear water (or even lightly yellow water) at the bottom then your grains were too wet. If you are overcooking, you are gonna have a bad time. If your grains are too dry, you’re gonna have a bad time okay? If you French fry when you need to pizza your gonna have a bad time!

Also the Cordyceps have grown more pins and, albeit very slowly, the old pins are reaching a couple more millimeters. I’ll get pics tomorrow. So far they seem to hate FAE and love humidity. I left the lid cracked and they stopped growing. I mist, I put lid down, they grow.

Long live Samsquanch

Slowly butt surely more primordia, pins, and growth.
I have another full quart of spawn ready. 1/2 will be mixed with vermiculite/dried mealworms. The next 1/2 will be just the grain spawn reknitting in the shoebox with no additive and the last HALF will go into a container with living mealworms bc I just can’t resist. Hopefully all in a shoebox!  Half grain, half worm, half mushroom, 150% success! This is doomed for greatness!

PS
ManBearPig just told me my math was off... it’s actually a third of the quart of sorghum going for each treatment plan. Not half. Thanks!

impressive grow. however, it seems the fruiting bodies are growing from the grains or am I mistaken?
in my experience, cordyceps will grow on pretty much anything but won't necessarily fruit.
It would be interesting to see if your culture will fruit on the same substrate if you inoculate with a liquid culture.
