King Oyster grow - possible mycogone perniciosa?
    #26973322 - 10/07/20 06:56 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Here's my KO grow, spawned to oven pasteurised coir.
I've had a case of mycogone perniciosa recently and I'm wondering if the same thing is happening again, or what I'm seeing is just regular metabolites. Perhaps too early to tell?
I scrubbed everything down well between grows.

TIA

Just a quick update, I think it's fine. It's pinning like crazy now, no MP-lookong blobs formed. Just a case of me worrying too much, I think, after what happened to a previous grow!

It could very well have been MP but then the kings beat it.  They're probably the most aggressive species I've worked with.  You can supplement subs with bran and not sterilize and they'll just eat all the contamination and still grow.

so its true you can grow KO and other oyster in tubs instead of using buckets?

also i think its shiitake and lions mane that need to be grown out of bags?

Yeah you can totally grow kings in tubs, they don't need much air like other oysters.

Thanks again, Forrester.

Perhaps I should move the KOs to another room, to be on the safe side if theres a hint of MP somewhere in the tub.

I'm also experimenting with agrocybe aegerita and buna shimeji in monotubs, spawned to a bucket tek mix of hardwood and coir. I didn't oven pasteurise these two, but used a preheated double-walled and insulated bucket. It maintained temps well.  Early days for these two, I read that buna shimeji take a while to colonise. Meanwhile the KOs are staring to fatten up. Super-aggressive growth, as you say.

Basically trying to choose CO2 tolerant species, as I find the tubs are convenient space-wise. I'm interested to see how they all turn out.

As always, thanks for the helpful info.

Definitely keep us updated, I always love to see people try Beech.  That one's not easy to figure out.

Beech: I'll give it my best shot.
Here's 8 days after putting to bulk, seems to be colonising quicker than I expected.

I'm thinking of casing and then cold shocking at about 50f from around day 20, if all goes to plan. I'll leave them in the cold for a few days.
Will update as I go.
Cheers

I think casing is a really good idea for beech.  The pins abort very easily!

Hey Forrester, I just realised I never got back to you with progress of the beech. Unfortunately the myc started pumping out crazy amounts of amber metabolites. No mounds or knots were forming at that stage, but I figured something was seriosuly wrong so I cut my losses and binned the project.
I plan to have another go at beech sometime, but instead of commercial spawn I was thinking of growing out a tisue sample on agar first. I can get hold of some beech pretty easily from a local supermarket.
The kings worked out fine though, but then again they usually do.
That's all... I just wanted to give an update and thank you for your help as always.

Nice, good luck if you try again!  Next time give it more time, IIRC it took mine a month or two to pin.
