BioMax HEPA Filter group buy?
    #27134220 - 01/07/21 10:54 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I'm planning on making a small/medium sized flow hood...however HEPA filters seem to be rather expensive and often available only in multiple quantities right now it seems...

I've got my eye on a BioMax HEPA 99.99% High Efficiency Particle Board filter measuring 24x12x5-7/8...

They're only available in a quantity of 4 and after shipping would be $115 each delivered to my door...

Curious if there's 3 other people out there that might like to split the order?

Have you tried fungi perfecti?  I ordered 3 hepa filters from there before, price was actually pretty good for them.  and shipping was pretty fast.

BTW I built a 24X48 and for the extra bucks it was worth it.  Go big or go home was my feelings.

I dont wish to poopoo but Fan filter units designed to be installed in a ceiling in a clean room are not the best thing for this hobby. Which is not the same as no good and not gonna work.

It may work ok but do you wanna work in a ok flow that will maybe probably work? Didn't think so. I would strongly weight my options before eating an ffu they don't taste well with mushrooms.

The laminar flow quality is sub par from anything that is not deeper then adleast a few inches. ffus are ONLY 3 inches. and their cells are almost same profile as a penny.
Really sad to see such big names peddle theese shitty FFUS.

Also guy with the ffu please do not take offense.

I want to get to the bottom on the truth I dont want to believe wrongly that
(ffu is good enough but could be better being true)

When some thing like "the laminar flow is the same out to 5 ft or whatever as compared to a 6 inch v groove laminar slit filter")

Can you show me some statistics or data showing the quality of laminar flow from ffu like how far it goes, How much interruptability air had or whatever they measure these differences as. As is related to mycology

and compare to a deep v groov aluminum channel 12 inch thick filter or 7 inch filter?

Keep in mind I did not say that wouldn't work or doesn't work!!

I did not say they are not good at making some laminar flow GOOD ENOUGH for culture work.

Lets just say cost is no object. Do you want a 3 inch ffu or a paul stamets series 2 laminar flow hood?

That wasn't fair. but I really need to know ffu's are either definitively good enough for myology with NO CHANGE IN STERILE TECHNIQUE SKILL TO PROPERLY WORK OOOORRRRR or will it carry a compromise of having to be 2 or 3 time more aseptic as opposed to a  filter not meant for general cleanroom ceiling area scrubbing?

I have to disagree with all of the above, mine works perfectly with excellent laminar flow which is what they are designed to do:shrug:

Half the ceiling FFUs on the market are also used in laboratory flow hoods. Manufacturers don't like having too many different sub-assemblies around, makes life harder than it needs to be.

Cracks me up that people will split hairs on depth of the filter, then use either type without any side or top panels around the workspace, or with an unfinished wood work surface. inski providing a nice exception

I am MUCH more convinced that there possibility of little to few compromises between the 2 units. between a series 2 workflow and a FFu workflow that is.

If there is a compromise (even a tiny one) you guys seem to say that it is negligible!! That would be very nice!! I WANT THAT TO BE THE CASE!!!

My resolve has been solidified now as I plan to get to the bottom of this unsolved mystery. So far my case included a TC testimony and a reasonable sounding person that seemed ti be confused as to why there was a question (This is good news toward FFU's not being as comprimize as i might detect they are.)

Also thanks folks for tolerating my slightly off topic clarification search.

It seems a very important thing to qualify.

TC have you worked in-front of a non FFU laminar flow like a series 2 I am curious to know your inoculation method noob to pro and every flow hood along the way. Do you have experience working in front of a laminar flow hood with triangle pleats? How did it differ in flows and technique if at all?

If there are other TC's who strongly stand behind FFU's this subject matter is of great iportance. Particularly those who have worked in front of both types but all testimony for or against qualitfying ffus for something either to push noobs toward or against!

I would also like to have an over all consensus of shroomery and Tc's say they are good or band and perhaps everyone agrees moving forward to endorse or officially deny they are good enough. Like over all all the TC's had a conversation and decide if their pushing ffus just as good or 95% as good or 50% as good with 2x aseptic still required?
.

No question they are cheaper and pretty much all 99.99 as opposed to the more archaic type we have used traditionally which 99.99 is much more expensive for. They are light much less fragile and are a smallerlighterprofile than a traditional filter.

So I built my FH out of a 2'x4'x6" 99.99% filter and the only problem seems to be my shoddy workmanship and poor management of my free labor . I need to re-mount the blower.

I lieu of honest, basic work, simple work, work for another day... I chose to buy Myers FFU on reccomendations by Bod and some others here. After using it for several dozen bags, plates, clones, and jars the only real issue is my laziness in culture work. Gotta always take the extra transfer. Additional note, I have a wall mounted HVAC unit in the same room blasting air while I work in a perpendicular direction from my flow.

My DIY FH was ~$550 and Myers FFU is ~$750. I like the professional build. I will potentially buy a second if I were to expand. I would hate to have to drive oysters like 200mi, but I wanna supply some good people who got a food trailer started.
