Americans
    #27134841 - 01/08/21 10:02 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

As a non-American, nothing about America seems appealing to me. I don't mean to understate the current circumstances, but I wonder, to the Americans on here, why not leave and live somewhere nice? I'm not trying to dig at anyone, I'd like to know what you think is keeping you there.

I don't watch news. I know many people that have significants complaints, my question is directed to those that are dissatisified.

Where do you suggest?

You’ve got a narrow field view of America and that’s ok. A lot of Americans are being exposed as pieces of shit right now.

But the US is a special place. Drive the west coast of the US and tell me America has no appeal. Or imagine a world without blues and jazz and movies from America.

People hate America but people also love America, all around the world. Music and film around the world are heavily influenced by America. America has led the way in computer science as well. Imagine a world without Silicon Valley.

So yeah I hate ignorant rednecks too. But if all you’re watching is the news, you have no idea what America is. It has been cool especially for Europeans to hate and shit on Americans for a long time now. Mostly due to actions of the American government but also due to a lot of ignorant rednecks. This is a huge place. You’ve got rednecks but you’ve also got New York City, Los Angeles... cultural hubs of the world.

As a non american who wanted to emigrate for a long time I can say I find attractive for example that their state law structure is allowing them to have some of the more progressive drug laws in  the western world, especially compared to good old draconian prohibitionist europe. Also remember all the studies and most of the entertainment like music or movies come from the US, so yeah cities lile los angeles always had an appeal, for a change a place where still not many but at least some more artists can actually make a decent living, I think thats nice.

Now now, I'm sure most rednecks are actually fine people. (Or rather, city people aren't any better).

Japan is xenophobic and you will never be accepted if you aren't racially Japanese. Korea is racist. China is totalitarian. UK: shitty weather, bigotry, and random violence. Middle east: religious governments and closed attitudes. Southeast Asia, Africa: poor countries so it's hard to earn a good living and be able to retire some day. Poor average education. Canada: cold. South America: crime and kidnappings. Brazil, Portugal, Taiwan: the language is hard to learn. France: I've known too many French people. Mexico: hot, meh economy. Russia: cold, totalitarian government. Sweden: weird politics. Netherlands/Norway/Denmark/Finland: how will you date when the locals are better looking than you?

Canada does seem like the closest to being a country without any serious issues. But no country is even ideal, let alone perfect.

Not everyone is able to migrate to other countries. It is not like every other country has an open door for immigrants/expats. Not everybody has the money either. But besides this, the USA is not as homogenous as some may want to think and this makes for a great deal of choices within the same country. Different communities, different landscapes, etc. If you just focus on the negative, everywhere you look you will see negative. If you are open to see the good things that exist everywhere, you will realize that you can appreciate the good things and friends that exist around you.

The entire "leave and go somewhere nice" isn't always as easy as people make it out to be. I actually wanted to move to and get my master's in Germany pre-COVID and eventually become a citizen. I studied abroad there in undergrad. It takes a long time to not only get used to the language of a foreign country if the primary language isn't English, but depending on the place, there are legal restrictions on your ability to stay for long enough. I personally could not have stayed because I wouldn't have been able to get a VISA without being a student there and/or having a job high in demand. It's probably different for other countries, but I don't think it's necessarily as easy as people make it out to be

most people dont really have the means to move. because america is so great and prosperous, the cost of living is very high. so all money gets spent on just barely scraping by.

On the contrary, the US dollar has relatively high value. If you are saving a little bit, the minimum cost of moving is almost nothing. Moving from a poor country like the Philippines to a rich country like the US would be much harder. That's not to dismiss the struggles of the poor in the US. I feel for them, but it doesn't hold a candle to someone in Cambodia dreaming of emigrating and wondering how to pay for a month of rent in a western country.

LOL, you're American aren't you?

Almost nothing? Show us how please, because for 99% of people that is far from the truth. Rich people maybe. The cost of moving to a different country is actually incredibly high, and that's on top of all the legal bullshit mumbo-jumbo if you can round it. Without a bunch of savings, and some kind of sponsorship or family to help moving to another country permanently is a very tricky business.

But what American wants to honestly consider that when they're shouting 'if yew dun like it bwoy, then yew can giddaut!!'

Amazing cognitive dissonance reductionism to prove that America is the greatest right there.

How incredibly unsurprising. A man who thinks the minimum cost of moving to an entirely new country is 'almost nothing', and has nothing but bad things to say about almost every country/continent other than America can't defend his viewpoints when they're challenged.

Lord have mercy!!

I agree with this the most. It would be expensive and complicated to move out of country and I would assume thats the main reason. Also, Americans are overall pretty Patriotic and dare I say stubborn and wish to stay, despite all the social and governmental issues existing here.

You seem to have a deep disdain of "rednecks".

Let me ask you, and serious question, if you could have every "redneck" systematically exterminated off the face of the United States, would you do it?

The US is a great place to live if you have money, if you're in the bottom 70% it's a real shitty experience for most of those people. Being poor or broke in the US is no different than living in most third world countries these days. If you have decent money in the US, it's really a decent place to live for a variety of different reasons.
