Bucket Tek with Coco Coir and Gypsum, but without Vermiculite

Has anyone done coco coir + gypsum, but without vermiculite?
Since people are doing straight coir, I figured adding some gypsum to it won't hurt. Or am I wrong?
I don't have access to vermiculite, so I cannot do a classic CVG. All I can get my hand on is coir and gypsum.

Thank you for your reply, Land Trout. Have you tried it? What was the result?

I use straight coir now, and save the gypsum for the grain prep. I only add verm if the coir seems a little too wet. I have seen no evidence that verm or gypsum get better results.

I think the idea with verm is that it yields twice as much bulk substrate

Do you just add the gypsum to your grain jars? If yes, in what ratio (grain to gypsum)?

Use a little bit of gypsum in your grain boil, a table spoon will do. All it does it help prevent the grains from sticking together. Verm has more retention than coir does, but using straight coir will give you good results.

Is the gypsum supposed to be a powder/dust or like little pebbles?

I haven’t used gypsum in awhile, on grain or in sub, and use straight coir, try to keep enough hydrated in buckets on hand ahead of time. I own a huge bail of verm, and buy gypsum by the 50# bag, but I use it all for gardening. Only time I use verm any more in my sub is if I’m low of hydrated coir and need to dry it out a little to spawn a tub, but only when I get impatient or in a hurry and don’t want to wait till I have some more coir ready. But it all works about the same as far as I can tell, CVG CV or straight coir, my thought is why have more ingredients than what I need.

Yeah, makes sense to simplify things. I know that straight coir works fine. I was just wondering if adding gypsum to straight coir would increase the yield, as gypsum is rich in calcium & sulfur and both these elements are used for food by the fungi.

I was under the impresion that, in a substrate, gypsum is primarily a ph-buffer, not a nutrient. Your mycelium feeds on your grains.
I use straight coir I'm my monos.

Not in my experience

Coir and gypsum are pretty ph neutral, peat is acidic and we use lime as a buffer.

Gypsum adds calcium so that means your PEs can have big girthy boners

Interesting, I have some dongs that are almost ready for sub, I guess I'll be supplementing.
