First grow, my grain colonized grain got contaminated?

Hello everyone, so this is the first time I try growing mushrooms. I injected my spores from a syringe into a sterilized grain bag, and more then a month ago it was all white. It seemed good, so I broke up the grain, and let was waiting for it to turn all white again. However, this time I noticed it had brown spots which I assumed was contaminants. I'm not sure how I contaminated the grain. Was it probably when I injected it? Or can it be because I touched the micropore tape? Either way I have 3 additional bags I injected a week ago. I am just hoping those will turn out fine. Any advice?

those do look iffy it could be a wide range of things syringe maybe. you might try making extra bags and don't inoculate one as a control. If it turns green and you didn't stick it then its the spawn most likely. Also you could go syringe to agar and see if you get a clean sample.

I am still new to this, but I will try and get some agar. Then see what happens with my syringes.

You have both mold and bacteria in there I believe. Multi Spore Syringe to bulk grain is always a bad idea. I have gotten away with it with jars/BRF, but bags I haven't ever gotten away with it. You see a MSS carries with it (usually, sometimes not) bacteria and mold.

I just checked my other bags, and the spores is colonizing. However all the other bags are showing the came signs of contamination -.- I'm going to try a different method I guess.

Here's what I suggest. Learn how to use Agar, Build yourself an SAB. Start cultures on agar from spore prints, syringes to agar don't work most of the time and are bacterial. Spore prints are the way my man, agar is your path. check out my sig for my SAB setup.

Thank you for the advice mushhead. I will have to try and get some prints with the agar method. Then I will make the SAB. So what should I do with my other 3 syringes?

I'll mirror what everyone else has said. Agar is super easy and there is no reason to start with anything else. It allows you to see ahead of time if there are any contaminants, and if there are, get rid of them. I bought a bunch of syringes because I wasn't planning to start agar until after I started with BRF cakes but changed my mind. Now, I use an inoculation loop, put a single drop of MS on the loop and swipe plates.
My germination rates are still pretty low (because it's from a syringe instead of a print) but it allows me to clean any contaminants away if I need to before putting clean mycelium to grain. What I'm going to do is get a good agar culture going from all of my syringes, then probably use up my syringes making some extra BRF cakes just to use them up. Or, eventually include them in my trade list. Cheers

As long as they're not like years old I'd try to use them. But this time I would go the BRF method instead of bulk. Gather spores from the BRF fruits and then move to agar.
