A watering globe. I've had this idea but never tried it. My subs aren't that thirsty though, maybe for an extra thirsty culture. I'd like to see it done.

Genius
I forgot to weigh 3 of the 4 cakes I tried it out before I started hydrating but the one I did weigh went from 62.8g to 171.1g in about 10 mins or so. Quote:

I don't understand.
hydrating means to add water.
How dose adding a vacuum, hydrate your cakes?
If It works great. I'm just curious on the mechanics of your project..

It pulls the air out from the spaces in the cake creating a negative pressure which pushes the water in. I run the vacuum for 10 sec intervals, then let it rest for 30-60. Doing to testing though with a couple pumps to find best application. If I can run a light vacuum for 5 min straight and get a fully hydrated cake I am so down for that! Even while running grains I always kept some cakes going for fun.
This pic was taken a for moments later and immediately after the cake lost buoyancy. I run them to the point of sparse champagne bubbles. Fruiting first test cakes now so we'll see.

I am literally going to do this and you should do a write up about it.

It's Part 3 of Doing "Science" in my sig. Still on going but check back every now and then. I'll update it as I go. Building a DIY Vac Pump as well so going to put a build for that in there too. 12v vac pump for about $15 could be useful for a lot of things.

I have used my suction hose on my shop-vac by reducing the suction hose down to a suction tube.. Just a thought...

Don't own a shop vac. Vacuum sealer I already had and DIY Vac pump is made from a $10 12v air pump. Not a bad idea though.

Huh. I have a basically new shop vac sitting around. Never thought of that.
Did you just buy vacuum sealer bags and convert the vac hose to fit?

Nah I had some 3/8" inch vinyl tube laying around from god knows which previous project. If I warm the tubing in my hands its just enough to slide onto the vac inlet on the vacuum sealer. Then just drilled a 3/8" hole through a jar lid, slid to other end of the tube through and sealed it for testing with hotglue. Will use silcone but hot glue worked well enough. The vacuum chamber could be anything but I like the jar lid as it is interchangable. I will likely get some plastic jars, cut the tops off, and seal those onto larger containers so I can use the lid for vacuum casting as well. Also works with a buchner funnel for filtering MHRB (and whathaveyou).
Literally cost me nothing to make this. Same with the DIY vac pump. A tire air valve, an 12v car air pump, a container and some tubing; all of which I have laying around and are easily accessible for most people. Tube can also be used for vac'ing bags to preseal.
I'm gonna do a write up for both soon but principle is pretty simple.
Edit: just realized your reply was probably directed at micelio. My bad
