purchase premade substrate for golden teacher
    #27132564 - 01/07/21 10:03 AM (3 years, 21 days ago)

Hi there! I'm a newbie trying to grow golden teacher. I would prefer to buy premade supplies where possible. I understand that the strain prefers brown rice. I have a small mono tub and would like to do a bulk grow. Are there any places where I can buy substrate premade that works well with golden teacher?

I apologize if my ignorance shows in my question. There's a lot to absorb :-). Thank you for any guidance.

What Tek have you referenced in order to do this?

Bods Easy AF Cheapest Way to Get Started

If you want to do bulk without using cereal grains (which would require a  PC [pressure cooker]) you can do the PF tek and instead of fruiting the jars like in this Tek you just cheese grate them into your substrate and mix it into the tub.

Bods Easy AF Bucket Tek

Use this to make your substrate for a bulk grow, it's a great Tek. If you're not using a large monotub you can either change the ratios to fit your needs or make more than one.

You can buy the coir from home depot or other garden places for really cheap, same with vermiculite. All you need to do is measure it out and mix it with water.

If you really really NEED a premade substrate you can order it from vendors that you can find on this site, but it would really be worth your while to make it yourself, it's a lot cheaper and you'll have left over supplies for another grow.

Good luck to you, hope this helps.

Definitely check the links posted above! Read all of bods links and teks get a good understanding and you can answer a lot of your own questions and get growing in no time.

Thank you much guys. As for what I've referenced, I have read many variations of PF Tek. Like anyone, I want to keep the cost down. However, my main priority is remaining sterile and keeping physical requirements to a minimum. I'm a quadriplegic. So, I'm basically walking others through the steps. As a rookie, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. :-) I have done a couple of grows using the substrate jars from Midwest grow kits with some success. But that's it.

I checked out the information you provided. It sounds simple from this guy. However, I don't see how keeping it sterile, especially without a pressure cooker. I feel like I would end up with a whole bunch of beautiful mold. I must be missing something.

Looking at ingredients, I'm thinking about getting grain spawn bags, bulk casing and vermiculite from Midwest grow kits. Given my goals, do you think these would yield a decent grow?

Thanks again for the guidance!

If you want to save money then do not shoot spores into a grain bag. The chance of it getting contamed are far higher than running the pf tek. You can steam brf jars and spawn those jars to coir. So you can do a bulk grow without a PC.

You don't need casing with cubes. The fact they a selling a pot of 'bulk casing' is confusing and concerning.

Seriously, save yourself time, money, and effort. Get some jars, get some brf, get some verm, get some spores, and get some coir.

I think I've read everything bod has on his simple AF list. I didn't see anything about spawning BRF cakes to bulk. He seems to prefer grain unless I'm missing it. I have a small mono tub and will likely eventually get a larger one. How many half-pint BRF cakes should I shred into the bulk substrate? E.g.: one for every 3q or something?

go for a ratio of 1 part spawn to 2 parts substrate or similar.

You are missing it.

To do bulk without a pressure cooker

Make the cakes as above, then when they are finished colonizing birth them (before the consolidation period as they do not need consolidation used as spawn)
Shred the cakes by hand or with a cheese grater. using your shredded cake spawn mix with bucket TEK coir (next two links)

use this to make a monotub or shoebox
shoebox tubs are $1 and a brick of coir is about $3.
suggested shoebox tek

I fruit shoeboxes with grocery bags

total cost to do bulk without a pressure cooker

$31-50

don't forget there will be some leftovers that save you money off subsequent grows.

This approach also has it's own thread. Read the search engine post, getting to grips with how to search here will make the world of difference.

Thanks guys. I remember seeing this information now. Must have spaced out somewhere. Sorry for asking a stupid question. I'm reading and trying to absorb as much as possible. Apparently I'm losing track of the shit I've already read.

Regardless, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and send links and such.

No worries! There's a ton of info here. Have you found the 'toggle favourite' button so you can save thread? If not it's waayy down the bottom of the page, under it is also the 'search thread' bar. It took me ages to find both of them.

The toggle favourite feature is a little odd. It saves threads into a section on your account page!

You can also copy and paste stuff you find useful into a journal post and keep track of it there.

Shroomery is killing my MSc work as reading here is more involved than reading papers!

I'll use the hell out of that "toggle favorite" link. I don't know that I would've ever found that. I use Microsoft one note to gather and organize information. But, my organized information is starting to get overwhelming. Think I'm trying too hard to lessen the learning curve. Starting my 3rd grow/1st bulk grow in the next few days.

Don't know what MSc work is. But, I get your point. This is a fascinating hobby. I was just trying to find a way to try shrooms for spiritual/health reasons. Now I'm sucked in and looking forward to building on previous experience.

Something I found very easy to do is get over excited and start too many things off. Which, in my case at least, stems from impatience. I've had much more success and learnt a lot more by chilling out and trying to run as few over lapping projects as possible.

I've also found it helpful to keep a journal of grows I am doing, you can see some of them in the link under my post. This helped me keep track of what I was doing, when I did it, etc. It also helps keep the impatience under control as I can look back and see that, in reality, only two days have passed, and not the 5 years it feels like.
