Condensation in my colonizing tub; water bead turned yellow. Metabolites ?
    #27132457 - 01/07/21 08:54 AM (3 years, 21 days ago)

Hi all,

this is a close-up picture of a water bead in my colonizing (holes taped up) monotub (1:2 WBS to coir only):

The picture is a bit shitty (too much light), I apologize. Basically I've got lots of condensation in my tub, especially at the top. Sometimes water beads fall on the myc surface - as can be seen in the picture. They're all relatively small - the size of a drop of water.

The whole surface colonized very quickly; coir is not visible there anymore. The interior is taking longer though - it has not stalled but it's taking its sweet time, perhaps because of the temps or because I compressed the coir slightly too much.

But there is this problematic water bead, pictured here at the front, that has turned yellow. It's definitely still liquid, but yellowish. All other water beads on the surface are still clear. Should I be worried ? given the surface itself is fully colonized, would it be preferable for me to introduce fruiting now to try and dry things a bit instead of waiting for full colonization of the interior ?

Thanks in advance !

Edit: sorry, should've mentioned; it's been 8 days since spawning, with the yellow bead appearing yesterday (day 7).

Also, here are pictures of the surface and the side of the same tub taken two days ago for general feedback:

Yellow is metabolites. That means it's contaminated. You could still get a flush or two. In my opinion you should always leave tubs in fruiting conditions, there is no benefit to taping holes or bagging, it actually slows things down. The only change I make in mine is to loosen the polyfill once it pins but the poly is already loose so it's not much change. There are 2 conditions, fruiting and stalling, pick one.

So I should definitely replace the tape with polyfill right now ? will wait for maybe a few other set of eyes to confirm but thanks !

More generally, does the surface of my tub look healthy ? also, should I try to absorb that yellow bead when opening it ?

Yes, tape is outdated information. The pics aren't very good, could tell better with the lid off but the surface looks matted, that happens when it gets too wet or stays too humid too long. You could still get a decent pinset but the matting will hurt. Like I said just because it is contaminated doesn't mean it won't produce, just not as well as if it wasn't.

It's difficult to tell for absolutely sure as the pictures aren't totally clear, but looks like it's just metabolites to me, that'll happen when water pools on the surface. That isn't contamination though, metabolites are completely fine, it's just something the mycelium produces when it's under stress like when water pools on it.

Put your tub into fruiting now. General consensus now is to put into fruiting conditions as soon as you spawn the tub.

There should only be little water beads on the surface, if it seems like there's too much you can take a paper towel and lightly dab the surface and maybe dry off the sides to get extra moisture out of there. The hydrated sub will condense more water on the top of itself and the sides of the tub.

Good luck to you

Thanks to both of you ! will be replacing the tape by polyfill right now, on both my tubs (had the yellow bead only on the first but the second has just as much condensation).
