Golf course oysters
    #27129101 - 01/05/21 07:13 PM (3 years, 22 days ago)

I think I've found pearl oysters growing from a dead tree on a golf course.  Could someone please confirm or correct me?  Should I worry about eating them as there are likely loads of chemicals used on the course (albeit on the grass.)

For the record I was playing disc golf, not ball golf.  Happy new year Shroomery!

Habitat: Growing on a dead tree, on a golf course in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains, Redwood City, CA

Gills: creamy white

Stem: Not much stem

Cap: light brown to creamy white

Spore print color: not taken

Bruising: none

Other information: Earthy smell

Yep definitely looks like a Pleurotus sp. (Oyster).

Looks a bit too old to eat though.

Nice find!

You should definitely worry about eating any mushrooms from a golf course. I have seen poisoning reports where people playing golf became ill just by being there. Eating anything from there shouldn't be on anybody's list of things to actually do.

If you're going to cultivate those, there shouldn't be enough toxins left over to cause any problems.

Happy mushrooming!
