Just realised my BRF jars are tomentose and wonder what that entails for this current grow?

Please provide us some pics. Tomentose growth can mean a few things within a brf jar. could be mold or being held back my bacteria Can't tell without an image. How did you set up these jars? Method used?

The mycelium is thick and fluffy vs being rhizomorphic.
A pressure cooker was used at 15psi for 1.5 to 2 hours then inoculated with spore syringes.
Ill get pictures soon.

Ya if you went from MS to BRF it could be more tomentose just because its MS. But also you have to think about what else could have ridden along with the syringe. Even if the needle was flame sterilized, the liquid within the syringe could contain baddies. We can't know for sure until we can see the jars.

Wet jars also usually tomentose (and bacterial) for me

I dont burn the needle. It isnt gonna do anything if there is already issues in the syringe.
One does look bacterial but the rest look healthy but like i said its fluffy and thick vs having root like structures.

Honestly you should flame sterilize the needle/scalpel every time no matter the situation instead of taking the chance that it too could have other contams on it just from being in the open air. The open air within your home is filled with contams and ugly baddies.

Good point!
I just got a air purifier and run a dehumidifier which should help lower risk of contaminates.

Well that should help a bit, but honestly I don't run anything like that, proper sterile technique, and use of an SAB/Flowhood is how you keep your cultures clean.

To answer the question more directly, no. Tomentose myc isn't bad. When isolating, we often visually target the fastest, healthiest part of the culture. After more and more isolations, the genetics become less resulting in rhizomorphic growth. It looks sexy but isn't nessecary. I got super caught up in chasing rhizo growth when I started cult and I realistically could have had fruits weeks sooner than I did if I would have stopped isolating and dropped a plate to grain.
Now, I just transfer a few times after spore germination to ensure that the culture is clean of contams.
Theres also the chance that I possibly isolated from better genetics during the process as well. My new end goal is to go to grain with as few transfers as possible and hope that the fruit that pops up the fastest is large or has distinct features, is part of a cluster and is potent. That'll get cloned and tested again and if I like what I see, that'll go on a slant.

Thing is Dr. Mario is that he's using MS Syringe -> BRF. There isn't any agar play going on.

So really the answer is still no Tomentose mycelium isn't bad. I remember when Pasty was isolating Rusty White that it kept putting out tomentose mycelium generation after generation.
Yeah I agree MS to anything isn't ideal and you get a fair amount of failure with that method, but you should always flame the needle OP. Fruiting is done with open air and all MS spore syringes have a chance of being "dirty".

You're absolutely correct and that's why I started with, "To answer the question more directly". Hopefully he gets some pics posted so we can give advice geared toward what he/she is dealing with atm but I also want them to know that tomentose myc isn't bad.

I agree It's all speculation until we get pics.
