Oops, fully colonized dishes, start over?

Hi all..
With all the festive silliness my plates ended up fully colonized. Been sitting for a month now.
I came to notice that it's not optimal to use colonized plates when going to grain and should rather be using the leading edge that's actively growing.
So my question is, should I rather start with new plates or use this as a practice round and proceed to grain? (first time working with agar & grain spawn)
Thanks!

You can use whole plates for grain. That is my preferred method. In fact this is what myself and many other individuals do when these things occur. If the myc wins out on the plate and the plate is known to be a clean culture use it. Leading edge is more for taking agar transfers. Taking the leading edge will help prevent you from taking bacteria that the myc has climbed over, etc. You should take transfers from those plates before sending to grain though, keep the culture going.

Thanks! So not all hope is lost Does it matter that they've been sitting for around a month at room temp? I can't see any contaminates and the agar was poured rather thick.
Also, when you say use the whole plate, should I just scoop it out or cut it large pieces and add it to grain?

When I say the whole plate I take the entire plate. I scoop my scalpel under the agar and drop the entire whole piece into a wide mouth jar. This is why I use 90mm plates because wide mouths fit them perfectly. You can take wedges or whatever too it literally doesn't matter as long as its clean.

I like to use my plates before it hits edges but for practice I'd go for it. I would cut into 4 or 6 slices. If you wanna get crazy you can make a couple transfers from each and put the rest to grain. You can use 1 plate in 1 piece and the other into slices and see how the colonization times vary.
