I also sometimes pay for month membership to illegal download sites like http://www.myduckisdead.org/
Some torrents if you just queue them seeds show up after a while. I would love to join a private tracker but I can't seed enough with my shitty ass internet connection and will get banned pretty quick. Rarbg can be good as well. I sorely miss Demonoid. Just vanished... owner is suspected passed away.

Remember napster and limewire? I would spend a whole day putting an exact cd together just to match the retail version.
Once I learned about TPB and Demonoid it was over. I had 1000s of movies and shows. I would take requests and get to grinding. Around halloween I'd even sell these horror movie packs that consisted of some of the top scary movies. The most popular of the bunch was my zombie pack. All black and white or original?

Even got a letter from the MPAA... But.. I feel like it was a scam..
I received a letter saying they contacted my ISP and locked out my pc. I then had to let them remotely connect so I could prove I no longer had that service.
Fuck... That wasn't real...

Back in 2009 I downloaded THOUSANDS of classical music pieces from the pirate Bay and other torrent sites. My idea was to recreate the classical music radio station but without commercials. Well it's even better than the radio station because I have tons of baroque and classical period pieces that they don't play on the radio.

a great speech is `Copyright Vs Community` by Richard Stallman
basically copyright is an outdated idea created in the age of the printing press, at the time it protected Authors without harming consumers, but both those points are not really true anymore

I stream certain events. I tried paying for a subscription service for one of the events but the service was so bad there was no way I was going to shell out $80 for it each year. When the free illegal streams work more reliably than the paid service there is an issue. I pay for Hulu and my 5 year old bought a year of Disney + without my permission lol. I also pay for one dedicated streaming package for a sport event that cannot be streamed illegally, it is only broadcast via their streaming service, never on TV. The service works great though, and I like to support the sport, so I am cool with it. I am also setup to record free over the air transmission, which I really like for Jeopardy, late night talks shows, and football games. Football games are so atrociously drawn out that I refuse to watch them if I can’t skip through the commercials and bullshit.
I am going to get rid of Hulu and Disney soon. I have no need for them. I have Amazon prime through work, it’s not great, and Amazon got rid of their two day shipping policy so I might axe that too.
Torrenting isn’t what it used to be, many of the streaming services have gotten good enough that people would rather just pay (though as the market gets muddier and more split up that trend will reverse). That said, if you really want to get pirated content and do so reliably and cheaply, Usenet services are the way to go. There are no seeding requirements and you don’t have to wait on seeders because the services are managed professionally. Usenet won’t help with live streams though, not in my experience anyways.

This is how I feel about Free vs proprietary software sometimes, not that Free Software is illegal, but it tends to have less feature creep, so its easier to use, does what you want without getting in the way with a kazillion icons to click

qft, the more fractured the streaming services get, people wont want to pay $5-$10 per service when they need like 20+ services, thats why netflix did so well when it was the only one, it was really easier than torrenting
also people tend not to like have to deal with storage and organization of files on their drive, they rather re-download (stream) the same movie every time they want to watch it, then have it on their drive once, I wonder how much bandwidth could be saved if everyone just torrented any media they were going to watch more than once, rather than netflix or spotify it

I have 24tb of storage. I could use a bit more but not a lot more. Though file sizes keep growing. A nice high quality movie is like 45gb now. This isn’t practical for very many people, so torrenting/Usenet isn’t practical for the vast majority.
Here’s a decent article on torrents and Usenet.

A raw file is going to be 200gb or more for most movies these days. I agree that in many cases, especially older films or shows, the smaller file sizes are just fine. It’s the 4K HRD with big audio that gets you into trouble.

I used to pirate a lot of shows and movies and kept a lot of hard drives going for that. But eventually many of the drives died and it felt like a waste. Some of the shows I painstakingly saved before are now on Netflix anyway.
With music I often try to download FLAC or rip to FLAC. But with video I have no reason to bother with super high quality stuff.

I managed to get into a private trading community for music. Epic content and quality. Torrenting can’t compare.
I haven’t tried usenet sources for music, but I am increasingly thinking I should.

I downloaded stuff with usenet for a bit in the early 00s but never with a paid server, just whatever crap one the ISP had. I always thought the redundancy element with parity files was cool though. And that it's a one-way transfer.
