Has anyone here made essential oils and could offer some advice? There are so many different styles of stills & I don’t know which one is the best for making them indoors.

An alembic pot still. The "Air Still" can work but isn't ideal despite what the packaging claims.
I would expect you to be indoors, why would you be outdoors?

I was worried about pressure building up.

No, I just want to learn for the most part. I would like to make other things like candles with the oils too.

Cyonic, but wouldn’t steam distillation have the possibility of pressure building? I don’t feel confident enough to build one.

Its not hard as someone who has ran many different stills it's not to bad not that many components. There will be pressure building.

Mycologist It would be fun to make it for profit but I would be happy with just being able to.

I was looking at electric ones because they claim to be safer but I would like to learn more about them first.

I think it wouldn’t be a bad investment as long as I get the right one. Is there any that are more foolproof than the other?

Doterra oils are so expensive and I don’t want to spend that much on them anymore.

They would cost way more to produce on your own, me thinks

You asked how to obtain essential oils. Steam distillation IS the technique people use to obtain essential oils.
No pressure won't build up any more than a n a kettle.
It's not steaming in a pressure cooker.
The method for obtaining essential oils is a round bottom flask filled partially with water on a heat source. I stead of the round bottom flask connecting to a condenser there is another chamber sitting stop that that is filled with plant materiel. After that comes the condenser that drips out the liquid containing the oil.
What happens is steam is produced in the flask of water at the heat source it leaves that flask and enters the chamber containing the plant materiel. While in there it heats op the volatile oils which are then realeased from the plant materiel into the steam. Next, it travels with the steam into the condenser where it cools down with the water and drips out the other end.
This is a glass, lab distillation apparatus, not something that is sealed in there. And it is steam, not alcohol or solvent vapor so there is no concern about explosions.
Any pressure build up would simply cause steam to escape from the joints of the apparatus that fit together without forming an air tight seal. It is air tight up to a very small amount but any pressure at all would cause steam to come out at the joints.

That design looks really really simple. Do you think that the equipment could be improvised with recycled materials? I don’t have what the things described in the picture above.

the oils (supplier) you mention are not that expensive , as someone has already said it will cost a lot more to produce them yourself once you take glassware ,heating and the time spent growing your own into account. im sorry but you are not going to produce anything pure or worthwhile using kitchen utensils or stuff lying around the house with little or no knowledge of how any still works. you have not said what it is you are actually trying to get or do , oils can be stripped in other ways such as using high alcohols (such as making cannabis oil from material )

This is meant also a hobby and learning experience. From everything I have read, I don’t want to use solvents and would like to use steam.
I would like to make candles, scented lotion, shampoo, & things of that nature. Do they have classes on making essential oils?
There was a copper one that caught my eye. It was pretty simple
I also seen one that resembled a coffee maker of a sort. I can’t remember the reviews on that electric ran one but I fear that it would not hold up.

People often underestimate just how much material is needed for making essential oils from flowers etc , its just not viable /worth doing on a kitchen stove etc . https://www.aromaweb.com/articles/essential-oil-yields.asp
any still will do the job (though glassware would be better for what you want), the one you mention sounds like a copper pot still.
just do a google search for ' how to distil essential oils at home' , do the same for your area to see if you can find any classes.

Yes i use this copper destill. you still need alot of plant material for essential oils. it depends on the plant, for example you can get up to 20ml oil out of 1kg lavender

Thank you all for sharing. I have seen many of the cooker set ups but they don’t look safe with the lid being flat. I have been looking into it more and have seen clay set ups that seem to do the job.
