44cm x 3.5" cuttings. Plant or create additional cuttings?
    #27126726 - 01/04/21 05:43 PM (3 years, 24 days ago)

Hey,
I just got some T.Peruvianus + T.Pachanoi cacti cuttings off ebay and they are beautiful!!!
and massive. (44cm long and 3.5" in diameter not including spines)

What would you do with them? Plant them as is..; or chop them up into 4x  11cm cuttings, pot them and have 4x plants?
I want these cacti to grow, so I don't want to use them as rooting stock.

How do I continue growing these cacti the fastest way possible; in terms of mass per original plant? Plant the cuttings? Or chop each cutting into 4x 11cm cuttings and re-pot 'several plants? (I'd imagine grafting would be beneficial here to speed things up but these are my first cacti, I'm still a total newbie and would just like to watch them grow for a year without doing anything remotely complicated lest I mess up)
Thanks,
B5

Keep at least 10-12" on the tip cutting (assuming it's a tip); the smaller you make your top cut, the slower it will root and grow. I personally prefer at least 6" on log cuts for propagation but usually use longer pieces. That should yield two pieces to grow with and that is how I would go about it.

If you have access to really powerful stock and it's ready to go right now, you could split a few ~3-4" logs that have several areols and graft them. This is more advanced and I haven't experimented with it yet, but it is an option if you have everything.

Also, scrub the flea market out.

Cheers, That's what I was thinking - chop the top off and let the bottom part heal and keep growing so; two plants.
If I was more advanced at growing I'd probably graft.

What do you mean the flea-market? Ebay? :tongue2:
These Cacti actually look pretty decent. My T.Peruvianus is very blue. Though they are wild harvested.

Here's a pic of a Pachanoi and a Peruvianus I recieved:

I'm going to grow from seed, but I wanted some for decoration in my flat and everywhere was out of stock. Plus I got a good deal on these Cacti.

The one on the left looks like a type of Peruvianus var Macrogonus, not sure what the other is.

aww, you think?
The spines on the one on the left look very much like a Peruvianus, The Macrogonus is a plant I'm weary of as it supposedly contains Tyramine which is bad with Maois.

You don't think the one on the right is a Pedro? damn

I didn't say it wasn't a Pedro, obviously it is some flavor of Pachanoi, I just don't know more specifically what it is. Did they come with names?

They are indeed thicc / pretty though <3.

They had names, but I think the seller had made them up which I found cute. I couldn't find any well known cuttings - everywhere was out of stock.

Ah, ok. That's a relief, I'd started doubting that guy on the left :p
I have 6 different 'Pachanoi' from this seller.
The giant one on the right in that picture looks to have fatter ridges in comparison to the others. I noticed that before posting but thought it was to do with maturity.

I'll post some pics of the others tomorrow when there's daylight. They look more like conventional Pachanoi to me, but my eye isn't trained yet.
I'm going to grow them and see how they go.
What I do love about all 6 pachanoi is they have Tiny spines. All the spines are identically small though each plant varies in colour which points to similar lineage to my mind, hopefully pedro lineage.

Thanks for the replies
