speeding up a cake to be used for spawning
    #2712517 - 05/21/04 06:33 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

yo,

ok, friend of a friend's cousin's girlfriend's roommates' uncle's landlord has a question.. seems to be a shortage of jars that will be ready for spawning some straw soon. was wondering if it would be a good idea to take some of the "slow" jars that have signs of mycelium (and no contams) quickly empty them into a clean plastic bag and crumble/mix them early to spread the existing mycelium. leave it in the bag until it grows out and then spawn ???

if that sounds doofus-like then maybe you can comment on this:
1 half pint colonized cake to colonize 2.5 pounds straw?? is that enough spawn? if not how much minimum?? it will be mixed thouroughly so i would think that ideally you could spawn a 5 pound sack of straw with a single cake ?? i remember hearing about 10:1 substrate:spawn ratio, but i cant put that into perspective (not that i really know if thats by weight or volume)

thanks

As far as I know the ratio for spawn to substrate refers to volume. You have two weeks to colonize the pasteurized straw before potential contamination. I think it is better to go a little heavy on the spawn to speed the process up,but you should be fine on the 2.5 lbs of straw to one cake.

You might try one cake into about five cakes worth of straw(1to5)and it will colonize very quickly. Then use that colonized straw to spawn into a larger batch of straw. Kinda build up to larger amount.

The cake into the ziplock sounds kinda risky to me,but if you try it and it works let us know!
