They look better for sure. What light are you using?
Also to an above poster powdering actives as well gives them more of a kick too! Must of had to hold on tight for that one!

Status update. They are really crowding the box! I am not sure exactly when (or how) to pick them.
I decided to pick half to make room for the ones in there. Some have turned black, but I think they are just covered in the spores of the mushrooms on top of them.
I am having a lot of trouble controlling the humidity because my house is really dry.
I don't have them on any light cycle actually. I keep them in my wardrobe and pull them out about 4 times a day to moisturise and fan with the lid.
Do they get much bigger than this? Should I be waiting longer to pick them? For scale, that's an A3 sized paper in the picture.

Those are ready to go. They won't get much bigger than that, but they will dump spore on everything fast and that looks gross. Crowded is always good.
Make sure to make a hand full of spore prints so you can keep experimenting.

Oh jesus thats a fucking great result! Don’t change alot if anything my friend! I would say pick them sooner next time. Its just before the veils break for best looks! Fuck spores getting everywhere and ruining the look.

It depends on what you're looking for. The best time if you are looking for potency by weight is far before you picked these ones Just before the veil breaks is ideal.
The best time to pick for spore prints looks about when you picked them so good job just a little extra weight per actives.
If you're looking to grow weight you let them get as mature as possible (preferable with a sterile sporeless or translucent spore variety so that you can get as much weight as possible.) So like I said. it depends on what you're after.
You should read this "How it should and shouldn't look" post. #4 has lots of visual explanations of when to harvest
Edit: and to answer "do they get bigger"? Yes they get bigger but with your variety it'll be a bigger mess then anything. All your future flushes will be black caps as the mature fruits sporulate on your primordia and pinset. The upside to indoor growing and watching your grow instead of going out hunting is you can choose exactly when to harvest for what purpose
And have fun with your mush my friend. Safe travels Namaste

I believe they just add water weight after a certain point, so they weigh no more or just a tiny bit more if anything when dry and get they get “ugly”.

IME big mature fruits don't lack diddly squat. Plenty of off the wall, full on, out there times with fully mature fruits. I think that picking them early is a good rule of thumb for most but it really seems to have more to do with genetic expression whether or not they "stop producing" actives at a certain point.
Maturity and degradation are different things. Most fungi are efficient at cannibalism when and if the time comes. This seems to be a point where any loss of potency generally occurs. Learning to recognize fungal behavior patterns and signs of maturity is a life long and enthralling endeavor for some.

What's interesting is I have a second tub (I original thought was contaminated, so I separated it)
It is now pinning and it has fewer pins but they are massive. I'll take photos when I am back home but the stem is as thick as my thumb on two of them. They are short but their veil isn't broken so I am watching with great interest.
I tried to take mycelium from the tub and inoculate a few rice jars but they all got contaminated, sadly. I might try using the spore prints to cultivate again but I think I already have more than one person can consume
As a hobby, it's very fun and I feel like I want to grow more just for the sake of growing them!

Here are the fruits from the second tub. I put them in the coir one week after the first tub (pictured previously) so they are lagging a little behind.

One of the mushrooms has a big white spot on it, which is weird - should I be concerned?

Took .5g dried to see if anything would happen and it did! I can't believe I grew mushrooms and they were also the right mushrooms
Going to try 1.5 - 2g this weekend!

I just added water to kick my second flush in and I noticed some contamination. The mushrooms are growing better than before but there is some kind of mold growing on the substrate.
Should I throw away these mushrooms/are they unsafe to consume?
Here they are a couple days ago:

I'm no expert but I don't see any contam in there at all. I see mycelium colonizing your coir and your fruits have fuzzy feet because they might need a little more FAE, but all in all they look healthy to me.
Definitely safe to eat, but as far as contams go, wait til someone more experienced than me chimes in, but I don't see any.

I don't see any mold either and he's right about mycelium colonizing the coir and the "fuzzy feet" due to not enough Fresh air exchange. Safe to eat. Or make tea. Have you tried the tea here yet? It's great. Pairs nicely with a little honey.

Oh awesome, I saw some fuzz that appeared darker than the rest and got worried. I'll keep an eye on it and report back if anything happens.
I am pretty inexperienced with them in general (did 1 trip almost 15 years ago). Last saturday I ate 1g dry (no prep, all mushroom) with a few friends on the beach. Felt a bit of nausea on the come up but my god what an incredible day.
I read that tea can reduce the nausea and lemon can increase the potency so I got a few tea bags for next time. Speaking of which, how often do you trip? I know your tolerance resets after a week but I am weary of tripping too often - though I am excited to try again as soon as I can

I thought it was typically no longer a common practice to make and use lc? I haven't used one in a couple years. I just use agar and sterile water. Inject, agitate and draw back up. Use immediately. No extra sugars. Lc is offers too many x factors for the environment you're trying to create. For an outdoor grow not a big deal. But indoor you are recreating the perfect condition for the mushroom to thrive free of competition. And any extra sugars is self defeating. Mycelium doesn't do better with more sugar or nutrition. It likes diversity not more. More nutrients longer to fruit. They have to run out of nutrition before they start producing fruit. Skip lc. Really. Go with agar and slants.
