Just wondering, with this chunk of metal I bought used being under high pressure in the vicinity of humans, seems similar to brakes in car, you don't want to wait for failure to fix it.
How to tell when to replace PC parts?

I mean once you pc something like twice you get a feel for it.
Really the only thing you should be concerned about is the gauge, other than that everything else is pretty visual.

Ya ok, ty man. Also, I like your clear SAB window tek. I been searching for a truly clear SAB for a minute for the same reason you were, but I think I'm just gonna try your tek.

Also make sure bottom isn’t warped or anything. If they get ran dry they will bow, if it wobbles I’d be worried.

Thanks, that was many moons ago. Still have it though, just use my newly built flow hood now.

Not 100% but I think RR said it’s not a bad idea to apply a small amount of oil on the lids inner gasket

I oil the gasket on mine. I think it just helps to ensure that if the vent gets plugged, the gasket blows out like its designed to. Makes sense to me.
All i do is inspect the vent hole, inspect the overpressure vent plug, and oil the gasket. And i make sure to use the right amount of water and not let it run out lol. What else is there?

RR said to use Vaseline on the inner lip of the AA PCs and if I'm not mistaken it's so its easier to take the lid off at the end of the cycle.
I'm not much sure on the maintenance on other pcs but I think there's some solid advice in the replies.

Yep, all good stuff, thanks guys. I hadn't thought about lubricating the safety gasket thing. And also didn't know about the warping possibility so I guess this one wasn't ever boiled dry and damaged.
And ya zMan I am about to build my flow hood in a couple weeks. Pretty excited about the project. Haven't done any woodwork in quite a while. But what's funny is i was at a Lowes I hadn't been to before yesterday getting materials for stuff and gonna pick up the stuff to do your tek, and accidentally walked down the aisle with totes, and there she was, the most crystal clear perfect visibility 66 qt tub. It's like glass. So I snagged that and bailed on your tek. Made by Hefty for anyone who cares. But still gonna need the SAB cuz I'm hoping to get more foraged fruits to work with this spring.

People may disagree with this but Petroleum Jelly will damage Silicone. It is listed as a 4 or Unsatisfactory on the Rubber Chemical Resistance Chart. This is made worse at high temperatures. That being said, you will replace the ring once a year and I doubt that is enough time to cause any issues. Presto recommends vegetable oil.

I do believe this to be correct. AA Sterilizers don't use rubber gaskets, aluminum on aluminum. Really you should thumb through the owners manual, should give ya the info you need.

A few things here. You are correct about lubricating the metal to metal seal on an AA PC with petroleum jelly, it's absolutely in the AA manual and the OP should deffinitely read through the manual for the type of PC they own. I had missed the AA reference you had made. I have a 23 quart presto and was thinking about that when I read what RamJam wrote. I assumed the "safety gasket thing" he was reffering to was the silicone gasket on Presto PC's Quote:

Make sure you don't go over 20psi and blow out your blowout valve. Don't leave water in it. Wash when needed.

I did this once when I first started, thought there was a gun shot in the kitchen...

I've run through a few extra parts. The pressure gauge is the first to go usually. The vent pipe and rocker weight will eventually go as well. As long as it seals properly and the rubber safety plug has not hardened/softened or been damaged you should be good to run it safely. If it hisses all the time or rattles more than it should or vents before desired pressure is attained, start with swapping the weight to a new one. that is the easiest fix and will get you started chasing down whatever the issue is.
All in all a full replacement of rocker weight, vent pipe, and gauge will run you about 60 USD online and delivered.
Seems like I get about 200 runs with an AA before it needs a tune up.
I've used lot's of different oils for the seal. Olive, avocado, grape seed, bear fat, bacon grease etc. Anything you can cook with that doesn't smoke at low temps works fine. The bear grease lasts 3-5 runs before it needs another application. Olive is 2-3 and the others get applied each time. Olive leaves a sticky residue after a while which comes off easily with alcohol.
AA parts are really easy to replace if you have hands and a wrench.
Pressure cookers can be very dangerous. please be very careful and follow the instructions from the manufacturer.

Damn, that helps nichrome, ive ran my AA recently and noticed the gauge wasn’t coming up, so I figured it was off, my jars from the AA have bacteria, but all the runs I’ve done in my prestos have been good. So it might be the rocker.
