Cats certainly are intelligent animals and very impressive hunters for their size, but they just have not really been bred to have instincts useful to humans to the degree that dogs (or, say, horses) have. And the few instincts they do have that are useful to humans (wanting to shit in something like sand or gravel and bury the shit, and catching rodents) mostly don't seem to be improvements from selective breeding. They have been bred to be less hostile to humans than their wild brethren to some degree, and that seems to be about it as far as behavioral improvements from breeding.

I count 5 dog types you listed. You forgot to say greatest companion dog. By the way I love cats too, I befriend most of them as quickly as I do dogs. However, it's hard to play frisbee with a cat

Really? I mean a cat is a bit less aerodynamic sure....but I bet the dog would still catch it

This separates cat people and dog people.
Dog people want a lot of affirmation that they are awesome, displays of submission and deference, they want to exploit the dog to do their bidding, to follow the trail, fetch the shot birds, pull the sled, put themselves in harms way and give their life to defend their owner.
Cat people enjoy their companion animal putting themselves on a pedestal, on top of the cupboard will do, they want opportunities to be welcomed into the cat's world to be approached by their companion animal on the cat's terms, careful, refined and proudly independent, with dignity.
a dog has a Master, cats have equals. Dogs throw themselves at you with everything they got, tail wagging frantically to be liked. Cats visit you sometimes, brush past your leg with a parting caress of the upright tail in passing, or straight up sits across your keyboard on your typing hands because hey: now its Kitty Time.

I had a cat because my daughter wanted one of her mothers kittens when she came to live with me. Bloody thing had me up and down several time an hour letting her in and out until she eventualy started ripping apart the bottom corner of the door with all the scratching. I took a saw to it and created a cat sized hole in the corner. When the council replaced the windows with double glazing units I had to go back to getting up to let her in and out again. Fuk this for a game of soldiers I installed a proper catflap prob solved. I still have the catflap, the cat went blind and disappeared around the time I joined this site.
As for picking up warm dog shite. Too many people with dogs on my estate don't bother, or, when they do because someone was watching them, proceed to drop the bag on the path or at the nearest lamppost -for some reason known only to them- as soon as the coast is clear. Others will throw it into the bushes where they hang for years like some stinking christmas decoration until they finally succum to the elements and drop down into the undergrowth
I'd get around the ghastly feeling of warm shite through a thin plastic bag by covering it with a layer of paper kitchen towel first before picking it up.

I don’t think keeping a dog around for utilitarian purposes necessarily implies any unusual need for affirmation. I’d rather keep a dog around to scare off intruders than a gun. Neither does a shepherd want a dog with the instinctual ability to herd sheep for the companionship. They have the sheep for that.

Yeah we are not saying they are just tools to us. Most dog owners view them as their actual brother/sister.

Either can be a companion, though it’s far less common for people to have their cats accompany them out into the world on a regular basis, but the utilitarian reasons to have a dog are a lot more wide ranging. They have been selectively bred for desired behavioural traits as much as any species has.

my cats always shit and pee outside not even in my own yard, I have never seen or stepped in cat shit, and theres no sand or gravel in the house so they dont do anything in the house. I did see them burying their shit too so that's awesome.

Whoops, I had 6 types typed out, but decided to drop "dangerous" and lump it in with "crazy"

There was an elderly woman in my hometown that was ripped apart, and killed by some neighborhood dogs while she was gardening in her own backyard. True story.

If she had some dogs of her own to defend her then maybe she would be alive today.

Maybe, maybe not. She'd have a greater chance of being alive if those neighbors had gotten cats instead.

Sometimes that's a really desirable trait. I like dogs a lot but can get exhausted by their need and love for attention.
Cats you can simply admire them from a distance watching them go about their daily life barely noticing you

Not likely. Cats sleep most of the day, and typically don't approach strangers.

There are definitely cats that will hunt humans though, no? Maybe a bit bigger than dog sized. Pound for pound I’d be more concerned about a cat.

A pygmy bear that only gets like 30 lbs would be a cool pet.
