Why the contam in second post?
    #27110864 - 12/27/20 03:31 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello, I've put a  lot of work into this so hope it turns out okay.
Made some brown rice and verm jars at field capacity, sterilized at 12 psi for 2 hours.
inoculated with blender LI from clean agar plate, took pretty long to colonize some not colonized completely, i noticed when I took the cakes out of the jar that some mycelium got bruised on the sides(i think that's okay right?) Then dunked it for 24 hours and covered in verm then placed in my SGFC that I prepared with nicely rinsed perlite, i put a thermometer/hygrometer in and i see it keeps at 99%humidity, it only went down when I opened the radiator close to the sgfc so i immediately closed it. Temp is around 20°Celsius, should I put a heating mat under the sgfc?
Also here are photos of the fruiting chamber and a cake that I managed to brake pulling out of the jar, looks okay to me and smells of mushrooms, imput appreciated

This is 4 days after, misted once a day when I saw that that humidity would go down.
I figure something is wrong sincere is green mold growing on one cake

don’t use a heating mat!!! 20c is totally acceptable for cubes!! a heating mat is just gonna fuck things up more. your cakes are looking a little weird, did you spawn the cakes that didn’t finish colonizing? usually if jars stall out like that or take forever it’s because of contams. cold temps can make colonization slow too but it shouldn’t completely stop or stall out

that “contam” spot looks more like bruising to me but could be wrong. if the color changes to a more solid green or it grows at all i’d just toss the cake. i’m not an expert on cakes at all but just wanted to try & help you out a little. they look like they may be a little dry. RH can give you an idea of your conditions but IME the best way to learn if your tubs are dry or not is by learning to read the surface conditions. you want your cakes/sub to be slightly glistening with moisture at all times. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21595437#21595437 this thread might help you a bit!

Thank you, the one with the green on top was the one that developed faster in the jar, it was the one that looked most promising to me, also after covering in verm and putting it in the FC the mycelium came on top faster then the others, was also the one that had the strongest fresh mushroom smell, i'll keep a close look and update here.
When I open the FC the smell seems stale, is it supposed to be like that? I think I did a good job in making the FC and rinsing the perlite, also the room where I keep the FC is a bit dry, i try to keep the humidity up with a humidifier though( it is not close to the FC)

it could be totally healthy & just be a particularly good jar. sometimes rapid colonization can mean contams but if it looked like myc the whole time you’re probably good. hard to say without having seen the jar myself tho. if that blue/green patch starts to expand excessively or starts to turn a darker green deffo toss it though

unfortunately i can only give so much advice as far as cakes grow having never grown them myself /: but i think the “stale” smell is fine, though if you really feel it needs it you can give it a fan or two. but fanning really doesn’t do anything, the air holes you drilled for the SGFC should be plenty of exchange. your cake surfaces should be moist, like in that thread i sent. that’s gonna be the best indicator of whether or not things are humid enough in there

it doesn't look good to me, more green than blue, but like he said if there's doubt you'll know for sure in a day or two. Stale smell is also a sign of infection. Some molds will grow faster than myc. Speeds good but it could still be contaminated.

It's dry, probably from being on a matt. SGFC should have holes on the bottom and current rises with water. I'd try to add some water to the perlite, push those cakes closer together, give the cakes a good mist, and stop fanning. Just let'em go and only mist when they look dry.

Those cakes don’t look good. I’d have tossed the greenish one, looks like aspergillus setting up.

So i thought to myself that they're all contaminated and i made the next jars for inoculation, i kept misting that cakes for no reason... Then surprise surprise  i'm curios if they will grow. Any thoughts? I'm pretty excited
