can cacti callous while still in the soil?
    #27121019 - 01/01/21 07:37 PM (3 years, 27 days ago)

im fairly sure they can as they'd have to in nature..
can you chop the top off a potted cacti and leave the stump and pot in the sun for it to callous? or does it need to be uprooted and laid down like a normal cutting.:strokebeard:
How many inches of the stump would you need to leave in the soil as a minimum?

thanks.

You can chop the tip off and leave the cut end in the pot to callus.

You can leave as much of the stump as you wish. I try to leave 6 inches but it's entirely up to you!

Yes, yes I did mis-read haha my apologies.

As Karode13M said 6 inches isn't bad idea I have seen as little as a couple inches work. I would add sometimes they heal wrong and concave in, if that happens re-cut on a slight angle to drain if it rains (especially in winter) and see how it goes. But an established cacti will heal no matter where you put it.

Haha.

It was an epic reply though.

Good tip recommending cutting on an angle as well. Limits any water pooling. :sanpedro:

I personally like to let my cutting calace over before putting them in dirt, less exposure to things that can lead to brown veins and mush rot.
