This area looks very swampy, do you typically find them in swampy celadine infested plains? There are a lot of spots here like that but usually produce poorly
Not swampy just flooded

I thought the line on cicadas was that they were wanton and indiscriminate herbivores. On the possibility that their diet includes Ovoids, I think I'll be extra aggressive early in the season.
I also wonder if there aren't longer-term impacts due to Brood X. The soil will change will all those tunnels and the insects' appetite will leave lots of wood on floodplain. Anyone who was into Ovoid hunting before and after 2004, 1987, or even 1970 have any take on my intuition?

Is there an official find thread yet? It appears Georgia has started but I can't find it yet.

The pear tree still hadn’t bloomed so were now running at least three weeks behind last year
Georgia ovoids pop about a month before they pop in the mid Atlantic.
Last year doctorghosty first find was February 28. This year it was nearly a month later. All indications are this is going to be an unusually late start for the season. I don’t expect things to get good until the first week in may with early birds last week in April

Hunting in these tall grasses for voids is a lot like what I'd imagine hunting for cyans/azures along the pnw coast would be like. Really have to slow way down and look carefully

Edit* i think the ticks must like to hang around on the tops of some the longer shoots. This is the third time i've found one on my neck walking through here. Also found a pile of some animal's guts with no other noticeable remains

Awesome habitat. Watch out for the ticks. On the east coast the lone star tick can give you a meat allergy. Been eating mostly vegetarian for about a year now. But it was well worth the hunt

koods I know you're tree's blooming is what we've relied on for the past few years but strangely enough, a few Bradford/Cleveland pears in this area are in full bloom while others haven't even started.
I just found that a bit odd. I know some do but not that much of a difference. Any thoughts?

I’m liking the mulch situation around the tidal basin this year.
The feral federal poppies are already huge. Next month feral federal ovoids

reminds me to get mine started. Also as others have stated this is very early into the mid atlantic season. Last year my first finds were in the first week of April but the normal for Western PA is around the end of April early May. Good luck all.

You guys have feral poppies? Thats fucking ill ima have come down there with my razor!
That looks exactly like Pittsburgh, there is three rivers and they mulch it all the way up and down each river but way to many people to ever get a decent haul without building security guards catching on.
Also do you know what type of pear tree you have, mine is green pear and we are just getting buds on it now.

If your tree has a name, “Bradford” for instance, it’s a clone. Every Bradford Pear originated from pieces of *the* original tree. Differences in blooming time reflect differences in the environment, with trees in warmer and better watered areas flowering earlier.
Some of this is due to microclimates, and some areas are just un/naturally warmer - DC is always warmer than my spot in NOVA even tho it’s further North (heat island effect + proximity to large bodies of water).
If you want early and late finds, look for areas that are climatically ahead/behind average.

The feral poppies seem to be related a lack of landscaping upkeep during the pandemic. Idk where the seeds come from, but apparently sometimes poppy seeds are added to pastries and other baked goods without cooking them. Also seeds from the previous year being spread around. There’s usually the occasional poppy in the museum landscaping. Last year there were poppies growing in an office building parking lot during the early shutdowns. By the time they got around to weeding, there were flowering poppies growing out of the cracks in the pavement.
