@koods Was it later in the season? When it starts to get hot out the mold and centipedes are an absolute plauge they ruin the whole experience. If it was me I'd be there in a damn ghille suit at night, that has to be close to 5lb dry in that one flush. Looks like you gonna need a bigger sack I usually take a big backpack filled with empty backpacks and fill as many as I can, the large military grade ones work good 80-100liter capacity is the sweet spot.
Also wondering if you all your collections are dirty like that, I think you said before you just pull the whole stem butt up, I've been thinking of switching to that approach this year instead of pinching at the base to see if it makes a difference yield wise

Glad to see the finds starting weather is looking good up here won't be long now.

Hello, long time lurker and grower (and hunter of ovoids). I live in Ashtabula county which is on the border of NW PA. I've been researching and hunting ovoids for years. I have all the right habitats in this county, but after years I've never found them. Are they only endemic to southern Ohio? The closest they've been found on mushroom observer was 2 counties south. Any tips or spots I should go to? Once I collect them I want to naturalize them in the Grand river in my county. I've already had mulch beds of other woodlovers here. Can anyone help me? I'm obsessed with ovoids and I think they are the new frontier of cold tolerating woodlovers.

The closer you get to the Ohio river valley the more common they are. The NW corner of pa is not that great for ovoids but I did find some up there when I was at lake Erie, they were at a public park with lots of streams, not far from the presque.
Looks like my tax money finally did something useful, the county mulched a bunch of boxelder trees in the plains, gonna be a hell of a season.

It's like this for miles, thick layer of chips right on the floodplains of a stream in an urban area.

Gonna be another year before that takes off. Year one you’ll find them at the edges. Year two they’ll take it completely over.

Last year was a much warmer spring and it was a great year. Last year by this time we’d already had a day or two in the 90s. We’ve had one day in the 80s. You really need some days in the 80s before the ovoids pop. They are a warm weather species. We’ve got another month before the season starts in the mid Atlantic. Last year was the earliest I’ve found them, the last week of March. Average springs they appear the third week of April. This is a below average spring so I’m thinking the beginning of may.
Don’t worry about it being too dry or not. The only thing that matters is if it’s rained in past week or so.

Above average rainfall for SWPA last 14 days. Pretty much the only bright spot in the entire region.

Looking good

Last year it started around first week of march, i think First few weeks of march this year were spent hunting in spots I had in 2020 and i kept coming up empty handed. Figured the season was just getting off to a later start. Then i expanded my search...

This is exciting! That looks a lot like the pheno I've been finding in MD.
I wonder where this area pictured drains: the Atlantic or the Gulf and if to the Gulf if you are in the Mississippi watershed. I'm also super curious if you know of mulching operations near you. Big finds in my area tend to be near major mulch spreads, I wonder if the GA timber industry has been bringing us more than wood chips

This area looks very swampy, do you typically find them in swampy celadine infested plains? There are a lot of spots here like that but usually produce poorly

Wow never seen this many psilocybes in my life. Found a stretch of mulched path that was fruiting voids in the thousands. Bad news is they were all too far gone. But there was sign of new life so I'll def be checking back soon and getting better pics.

These were all fruiting as one clump. I broke them apart as I was pulling them up. And there were a bunch more like this
some half decent specimens
signs of new life
