I am kind of going the other way...  trying to build patches in places I think might get found, like on the edge of trails.

I think the most ethical and reasonable way is to just clone a fruit to agar. I did just that this year. Once I get it expanded, I'll throw it out somewhere that should have them but doesn't.

I've got it on cardboard now, I don't have to be sterile anymore. By the end of Summer I should have enough to make a few nice patches and I didn't have to ruin any other patches.

Even if you can't use agar, you can use stem butts on cardboard to get some myc. Once you have a little established myc under your control it's super easy to get it expanded.

I like this. There are all kinds of trees with little bits of mulch around my town. I wanna bury a chunk of myc in them all. They won't all take, but enough should.

Yep.

I thought this might be the case with the humidity, but I've yet to find any on mulch. Is the mulch almost always in flood plain areas for voids? Heavy mulch in parks in northern Ohio doesn't seem to be nearly as much of a thing as where you guys are.

Mulch will be anywhere workers chop trees, powerlines, roads, trails, pipelines, etc

My best "wild" find this year was where they cut and chipped trees for power lines right along a stream feeding the ohio river.  The trees where cut and chipped sometimes in 2019 and fruited this year.  This spot was maybe 50 yards from the start of a more natural habitat and the voids quickly jumped to those chipped bits.

You got it. Those situations are the best. Laying down mulch over land that already has colonized material is like putting gasoline on a fire

Mulch generally requires more rain that other situations because mulch has a lot of surface area and wicks moisture to the surface where it can evaporate

Yeah it's just too dry. The popup storms missed the spots and the new spots I'm checking I'm not even sure have flooded this season. This aint no OH River.

Only chance in the floodplain here rn is logs/debris and multiflora rose for shade and shelter. The rose likes to grow over debris piles (ouch). Can't really have a machete out 'round these parts

It looks about done and over for this season.

For those setting up patches for next season take a look at aspen (Small Animal Bedding) shavings.
They are cheap and easy, I havent used them but dont see why they wouldnt work.

Wood that has been chipped into 2 inch by 2 inch squares and a 1/4 inch thick are best. Shredded stuff doesn’t work very well. Bark mulch is useless. It helps if there is some grass material in the mix as well. It also helps if you lightly seed some vegetation in the mulch, so there is some growth during the spring. Cover the mulch lightly in grass clippings or chopped up leaves. Mulch bed shouldn’t be more than 4 inches thick laid over existing vegetation or dirt. Mulch that is piled up too high doesn’t seem to be very productive. Any hardwood will work. You want grasses to encroach the margins of the bed. Maples are best. Sycamore and tulip trees are good. Oak is ok. Elms are good. Pine is bad. Generally the lighter the color the wood the better

Those are my mulch tips

Good mulch tips koods, occasionally I find them fruiting from large piles if the shade and water is adequate but usually takes multiple seasons for it to produce something

Went this morning after seeing bunches of lawn mower mushrooms pop up in my yard with hopes of finding some Oviods.  Got to my spot = a barbwire fence with NO TRESPASSING signs.

Looked across and seen patches just flourishing. ☹️

That was a few on the border so to speak or what I could reach.  Frustrated, I went up river along the banks where I've found a few before but had NO LUCK.  So I went back & literally slipped & fell straight on my ass.  After I stopped laughing - I called it a day.
