Wild Fire Salvage Bolts
    #27120266 - 01/01/21 12:04 PM (3 years, 27 days ago)

Hi all.

I am gearing towards growing some edibles. It's been a few years since I've done any growing.

The area I live in was ravaged by wild fire.

My place is actually a small island of green, and life surrounded by a vast span of wasteland left by that fire.

I have access to plenty of live hardwoods for cutting into bolts for log culture.

However, there are so many perfect sized standing poles that is m wondering about as to whether they would be good for mushroom cultivation.

First of all yes I will be up to my ears in morels this spring. My area is known for wild fired, and the literal tons of morels that get picked after the wild fired. I see them loading up crates and crates at the mushroom buyer.

There are 100,000s and thousands of hardwood poles that are semi alive. Several oak varieties, maple, madrone and others.

It is my understanding that cut poles must be inoculated no later than a month or so after felling.

These trees are still alivish, but won't likely put out foliage or grow back.

The outside of them is charged, foliage dead, but if you cut into them they are green still.

So I am confused as to whether these would be suitable for inoculating.

As far as I know, they are alive and not being infected, but at the same I don't really see how they could be defending themselves like a normal, unburnt live tree could.

Any input, insight, thoughts or experiments would be great, thanks!
