cubensis contaminated by cordyceps?

Hello, this is my first grow and first post as a forum member. I grew cubensis from a spore syringe and inoculated bags with grain spawn bags from monster mushroom co. the mycelium started to show orange metabolites but looked healthy so I mixed the grain to bulk and after the mycelium covered the bottom of the tub I fruited the tubs. By this point there was a lot of orange and I knew it wasn't right but couldn't identify the contamination. Since this was my first grow I kept the tubs to see what would happen and they have fruited a little but not well. Over Christmas my Aunt told me about the cordyceps she started taking and I was curious and googled them and they looked exactly like what was in my grow. Not sure but it would make sense as the contamination came from within the grain bag or spore syringe which came from a mushroom grow business which would likely have other spore types. Can anyone offer some insight? thanks

Yeah it is pretty cool. Im glad I didn't toss the grow. The substrate was a coco coir, vermiculite, gypsum blend. Now on to cordycep research!

That's wild! How insanely unusual to have cordycep growing in those conditions. I'd post this up in the cultivation forum or one of the other advanced mycology pages and see what they have to say. I know there's a few guys here that professionally cultivate cordycep and would be interested to see what they say

where did u get your syringe from ? do they sell cultures aswwell? hard to imagine getting a "contam" of cordyceps. or maybe they sent you an incoculated spawn bag? did u see any growth start in the bag were u didnt hit it with spores? ie did growth start at top of bag?
def nothing u did wrong i would call teh mushroom co and send them pics of your cordyceps militaris. dont mention cubensis growth. could be from spore syringe but think u woulda noticed it being more of a murky liquid culture vs black spores in clear water. whats crazy is that militaris grows on just grain like that, always assumed cordyceps was a bit harder to grow. but they say needs a bit more insects to get stronger non sugary fruits.
eitherway cordyceps is medicinal and def works VERY well, clean out yoru sinuses.
you can get a positive ID if you want to confirm 100%.

No they sent you the wrong syringe or the bag was a pre colonize with cordyceps and they fucked up that way.
Regardless, get a refund or a replacement. There's no way your aunts cordycep supplements found there way into that environment. Correlation does not imply causality.
But god damn its fucking correlation and a crazy coincidence. Cordyceps have great health benefits, one of the big members on this forum grows them and makes health tinctures etc. Definitely grow the whole thing out and utilize them or maybe make a gift for your aunt!
also the TI says they think they see some cubensis in there. I disagree, but it's 100% possible and they'd know better then I.

I believe it would be relatively easy to check, if it is indeed Cordyceps shouldn't there be some remains of dead larvae in the substrate?
If there are indeed P. cubensis fruiting from the same substrate, I'm inclined to believe the intruders came with the grains. I'd let these grow to see their development.

I got the spore syringe from a local hydro shop that had a list of strains to choose from. I chose honduran cubensis. I have the syringe in a fridge and just looked at it and it seemed kinda cloudy so maybe it was cubensis mixed with cordyceps. I may try using it again and see if anything happens. Still not convinced I should munch these orange things yet. It seemed to colonize along with the cubensis where I inoculated the grain spawn. how long does fruiting take on cordys? they only seem to be growing on the grain and not really colonizing the bulk substrate as well as the cubensis mycelium.

I think they are indeed cordyceps militaris. They are growing primarily on the colonized grain and not on any of the rest of my substrate. They smell like mushrooms too! Here are a few up close harvested pics. Not sure if they are ready or not or if they will even mature fully.

Definitely matches the macro features of cordyceps militaris
