Identifying bacteria
    #27119510 - 01/01/21 12:17 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello, i use the monotub tek and use substrate ordered from online as well as grain spawn. A few months ago I got a bag of substrate that had orange contamination in two of the 10ish bags.I went ahead and used the other 8 and since then Ive lost about 75% of my tubs do to an orange sponge like bacteria growing on it during fruiting conditions before mushrooms appear.

I have two tubs that are about 5 days into fruiting and it has appeared again like clockwork. I have cleaned the tubs, the grow area, and am pretty meticulous regarding these things. But as of lately Ive lost a lot to contam in substrate and this problem and am probably about to stop this hobby until I can have a real sterile environment.

I usually just throw the bricks out but today Ive tried to cut out the bacteria and yes I know its not going to work.

Any help would be appreciated in idenfifying or dealing with this. I will post pics when I learn how to do so.

90% of the people here that use premade spawn and substrate have contamination issues. I would bet money that if you make the spawn and sub yourself, you will probably see much better results.

All you need is a pressure cooker, some grain (whole oats are cheap and easy) and some coco coir.

Spores are likely contaminated with bacteria as well so injecting spores into a premade bag is like a triple whammy for contamination. Agar work is intimidating but its really easy once you try it a few times. It actually becomes pretty fun if you're into that kinda thing. Theres lots of great links in my signature.

If you don't have access to a pressure cooker, you can try pf tek. I skipped cakes and went straight to "bulk" because cake teks seem like just as much work and more baby sitting and have a lower yield.

I will be moving soon so I might just take a break. I would love nothing more in the world then to start using agar and creating my own grain spawn but Im under the impression you need a sterile enviroment/air hood for that, which I do not currently have access to.

You don't need a flowhood to do agar.

Just a Still Air Box (SAB) and follow the procedure to sanitise your work area. It's not as difficult as it seems.

i went straight to bulk as well my first grow, still haven’t ever grown cakes. if you don’t have a pressure cooker but don’t wanna do cakes, you can make BRF cakes just like you would with any tek for cakes, but instead of fruiting them as cakes in a SGFC or whatever you just break em up into some coir like they are grains

also yes an SAB is def all you need to be successful & i promise all of it is much easier than it sounds. agar especially sounds intimidating but it’s all super easy

Im not itimidated by agar I promise, we have worked with it in college. I also started with BRF cakes before monotubs. I did not use a pressure cooker but instead sterilized with steam in a pot.

I may look into agar/creating grain spawn but yeah like I said Im moving in a few months and not sure I want to learn a new tek to do potentially only do once.

I want to clone badly so I can get even and big flushes.

i think it’s worth doing even if it’s just once! assuming you can grow again after you move, you take those skills into your next grow. also cloning & those beautiful wall to wall flushes only comes with agar & grain pretty much, even if you just get one solid flush i’d say it’s worth it. you never really lose the skills once you learn them
