as a newbie, I want to start on something small. I am looking for an inexpensive shoebox set up. Any recommendations?

I use these. You can find them with grey lids too. Here's the shoebox tek I like.
I leave the lid snapped on until the sub is fully colonized and then I put another empty tub on the top of it. Some people just unsnap the lid and leave on the tub but when I did that, the fruit were growing more towards the sides of the tubs trying to get to the light instead of growing straight up.

Pretty easy... The only question is how wet does the substrate have to be to not have to mist it?

I'm just starting shoebox also. The coco coir substrate should be hydrated to field capacity, then just a light misting on the casing layer as per tek.

You don't want to have it wet past field capacity
The surface of the substrate should have thousands of tiny drops of water
Over time they evaporate and need to be replaced by misting with a spray bottle
If you are in a hot and humid climate its not as important
Every room has different ambient conditions so you have to figure out what works for you

Hey BoJim. I love watching videos. I find them very helpful in comparison to reading. Sometimes people’s instructions in writing are not very descriptive and they use abbreviations that I don’t know what they mean. My question about this video is… Aren’t they being oxygen deprived in that double tub method I mean the fruiting chamber/colonizing chamber with the substrate is sealed and then that’s inside of another sealed tote. After all I’ve been reading and watching I thought they need some kind FAE. At least I know that abbreviation! LOL. Get back to me at your convenience. Thank you very much and happy new year.

cubes get by with relatively low, automatic FAE. A lot of tubs that are used for shoeboxes have loose lids that allow enough fae. so you can literally leave the lid on and leave them alone until mushrooms grow. Dubtubs could be seen as a waste of a tub as you could easily just throw a shopping bag over the top and double your tubage.

I seen on youtube someone using a grocery bag as a liner inside the shoebox, said it reduced side pins. I seen others spray paint the bottom portion of the shoebox black. Are these good ideas or waste of time?

Dub tubbing isn't wasteful as to my needs. I've got plenty of space left and running 5-6 shoe boxes easily yields enough fruit to last me years.
There's plenty of good liner teks out there. It's as simple as laying a bag down in a tub and dropping spawn on it. Painting the tub won't do anything for you. Side pins come from a space between the substrate and tub wall which creates a climate more suitable for the mushrooms and they decide to grow that direction instead of off of the top of the sub. People used to believe that side pins were caused by light hitting the side of the tub but that's outdated information.

Blacking the bottom of tubs is a waste of time, pins, and therefore mushrooms, will grow wherever the conditions are best. Liners are meant to shrink with the substrate preventing a gap forming between the tub and the substrate, avoiding a favorable microclimate occurring there.
However, if your surface conditions are on point then there is no real need for a liner.
Also remember any mushrooms that grow, be it on the top, side, or underneath are still active and edible.

Yeah it's definitely not a sinful level of waste, but say you've only got two tubs, then using bags over dubtubbing seems sensible.

I supposed that's a pretty fair statement. I live pretty close to anywhere I'd need to go to buy things. Home depot is about 15 minutes away from me and they have 75 of those shoeboxes in stock for like $1.25 right now. Last time I bought them, I just grabbed 20 of em and didn't really even think about it.

Haha, I'm certainly not saying NEVER DUB TUB! But sometimes is easy to forget that there are options whatever gets mushrooms grown!
