If your going to taper quit to a drink you hate the most. The shit you wouldn't ever order at a bar. Scotch, Gin, Tequila. Get the stuff you really don't like the best and it will help you stick to a taper.

Also don't keep any liquor in the house except for that drink that you don't like during the taper. And after the fact I wouldn't keep liquor in the house at all.

If you gotta spend a couple days drinking through all the little quarter bottles of schnapps and whatever else, get rid of it. You can't have anything in the house. Dump it down the sink if you want, but get rid of it. A sober life doesn't keep any of that shit in your house.

I can only speak how I quit drinking. It sucked. Drinking heavily for a long time sucks. What worked for me won't work for everyone, but I can share my experience.

Anyone who is wondering if they might be an alcoholic can take my experiance and learn a few things, then that is great and hopefully they can find peace in a new year.

im in the same boat. im going to get crocked for new years but as of jan 1 2021 i plan on tapering off. i drink about half a fifth to a whole fifth of whiskey every day and im sick of if. its destroying my body because i aint so young anymore.

do you drink every day? and how much? you may be able to quit cold-turkey. i had a real scare with quiting cold-turkey a few months ago. i knew the risk of quitting alcohol abruptly but i just didnt think i was in that deep. i was wrong.

Yeah that's an amount of alcohol that I would NOT recommend trying to quit cold turkey. Someone close to me is an alcoholic, take it from me, if you don't replace alcohol with something else: videogames, working out, running, bike riding, flight sim, church, SOMETHING, you're going to go right back to drinking again in less than a year.

Also I would HIGHLY recommend seeing a therapist and psychiatrist to try to figure the reason why you drink. What does getting drunk help "fix" within you?

For me, it is boredom and anger. I went 8 months without alcohol to help support a loved one with their alcoholism, and I have realized that embracing boredom and doing other things to mitigate anger like going for a run are a better way to live. I stopped nicotine and holy shit was that rough. Depression I am still dealing with 4 months later, panic attacks, anxiety, rage, etc. That shit put me through the wringer, that's why I started running when I quit nicotine. It really helps to have SOME reliable way to get endorphins.

Depends on the drug

For heroin opiate addiction whatever its ROUGH cold turkey

I like at least some subutex or percs or whatever the first few days

Xanax if you're deep you gotta taper

Alcohol I mean they're just gonna give you benzos to kick

Coke meth weed all that I'd say just stop

Advice coming from a dude shitting his brains out on a toilet after doing maybe 4mg of sub for a week (drinking on xanax too)

Was off everything for like 2 months cold turkey

One binge and I'm not like I was cold turkey but I dont even have the energy or wherewithal to answer texts sexts naked txts from this super hot polish chick

Dont get hooked on opiates kids

Cocaine is on par with alcohol and benzo withdrawals and can be just as lethal if done cold turkey after one has become dependent.

Quit meth in my 20's by becoming a drunk and hiding in bars for a year. Then I quit drinking while I could.

Nice thing about meth heads is they rarely go to the bar too influence you.  :cokeitch: :lmafo:

QFT.

Stimulants such as cocaine or meth are pretty easy to quit cold turkey as they have totally manageable or non existent physical withdrawals. You just have to want to quit and keep that mindset and you’ll accomplish it.

Downers such as opiates/opioids cause a significant degree of physical discomfort during the withdrawals. To the point of interfering your ability to carry out simple daily tasks. They drain your emotions and kick the shit out of your body.
Far more comfortable to taper off. Tho the mental addiction sticks around even after passing through withdrawals and detoxing.
It’s rare that cold turkey will last long term with this class of drugs.

Depressants such as Benzodiazepines are not safe to quit cold turkey if you have a significant addiction. ALWAYS TAPER.
Benzos can cause life-threatening seizures if you quit cold turkey. Of course this requires a pretty brutal addiction to occur but it’s been reported in people who took their medication as directed also, best not to play with your life and taper off the benzodiazepines.
Even worse are the notoriously potent benzo analogues that keep coming out. Short highs with long half lives. You’re just asking for a haggard addiction and difficult to fatal fallout from long term use.

TLDR?
It all depends on class of drugs and degree of addiction.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer for your question.

Quitting cocaine cold turkey isn't going to kill you. Quitting heroin cold turkey won't either. All sorts of addicts of both are sent to solitary confinement in prison and they don't die. Benzos and alcohol you need to taper

There have been some deaths associated with opioid withdrawal. Untreated nausea and diarrhea can lead to dehydration and heart failure.
