Peyote growing questions/concerns

They were ok when they arrived. I first watered them and then again like 4 days later. Then again 3 days later. I’m wondering if I am overwatering them or if there is another problem with them. I view these beloved cactus as children as I don’t want any human children. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Did they have roots on them? If they didn't, stop watering them. Dry conditions will force them to root. The one in the second to last photo is rotting, and likely a better candidate for making tea at this point then anything else. What kind of soil did you use?

They all have roots on them. That one that’s rotting was not great when it arrived, but it’s gotten worse. My concern they are all starting that process now so I’m assuming they are having too much water. I used the cactus soil from Home Depot. Maybe if I top the soil with fresh soil, they can be saved? Possibly even the rotting one? These are purely for growing, I got some additional ones in a different state...

I'd pull them out and let them dry out a bit. Then when they've stabilized put them in a 50/50 mix of sharp sand and regular potting soil. I've lost a couple to rot, not fun.

Thank you kind sir. I appreciate it. I took them out, I put dry cactus soil on top of what was there so maybe that will make the difference. I’m hoping that one comes back from rotting, it’s still green at the very top so MAYBE, but losing one out of 10 isn’t so bad I guess.. I’m just concerned for the little ones because they can go so quickly. And now I’m also wondering if they have an internal clock and know it’s winter. They did get frozen during their travel so maybe that put them in “hibernation” mode.
The only thing is when they got here, they were shriveled up, I potted them, gave them a decent amount of water and they all plumped right up and were happy, I left them alone, no water, they started to shrivel again so I watered them and they haven’t been the same

Yeah, they can be tough, I lost some really big ones fresh from south Texas to rot and they never even went into the ground.

Do you think the pots might be too big for them? The guy said yes, then he said no. I don’t know what to think, I’m sure they are too big, I have 6 small ones in the big pot and 4 larger ones in the smaller pot

They don't need that much vertical soil space. It would likely take fifteen years for them to develop that much root mass.

I would re-pot all of them in tiny clay pots like I have this one in, but this is still overkill for plant this small.

I know I need to repot, I’m gonna do that in the spring. Just wanted to give an update on what they look like and any further comments/suggestions. Obviously there is no saving that rotten one which is unfortunate but the others seem like they are starting that process.. they came like that and after I watered them first, that went away on all except that one. Now it’s coming back after the dry soil again. I took a spray bottle and sprayed the soil down a little bit, a few squirts to give some moisture but that’s it and see what happens. But here is an update before I misted them
