Just bought a road bike for cycling/racing

I grew up bmxing but after 17 years and working full time, I can't risk fucking my body up any more. The last time I road too, my wrists were bothering me for days from hopping on ledges. Anyway, I realized I just enjoy pedaling around any more and the travel from spot to spot, ended up saying fuck it and bought a Cannondale Synapse road bike, it's nuts, carbon fiber it's so light weight. I bombed a hill by me and my gps said I hit 29.3mph and I wasnt even trying. No helmet either(dumb) but that's still coming in the mail lol.
Anyone else into cycling in here?

Im in a running phase but I was riding a lot over the summer. Bikes are great! You can really get out and explore. Makes me feel free.
Just do me a favor an wear that helmet brodog. Get some nice lights too. There are a whole lot of dumb blind idiots out there.

I have a Javelin Parma, but I haven't ridden much this year. I spent most of the year living in a neighborhood with really fun hills and curves, but not safe to ride because traffic drives too fast through there. Actually not really safe to ride where I am now either, even with lights, which I have. There are some golf course neighborhoods that are pretty safe with plenty of room to share road with cars, I should get back to that.

I was always a runner too but last summer I had a high ankle sprain and I don't think it will ever be normal again. Feels arthritic and painful, I also work on my feet for 3 12 hour shifts so running on my days off does not entice me any more lol

I was in marathon shape a few years ago but saw what running so much did to my dad's mobility after he ran a lot while he was my age. I decided I would rather not risk the chance of needing a walker at mid 50s.
Bicycling is so much less strain on the joints and everything.

Yea, I'm a former strength and conditioning coach and I'd get runners to train. It's almost mind blowing how little power these people have but can run a marathon. I remember vertical jump testing one guy who looked like a skeleton and his vertical jump was so low I was in awe. Running is not very good for you and has one of the highest injury rates of all recreational physical activity.
I did enjoy it though, my furthest ever straight run was 7 miles and I was like eh, yea, I'm done. Also the gains from cardio exercise disappear so rapidly that's why they all have to run 4-7 days a week, no thanks. But now I'm getting kinda fat from only weightlifting and drinking so I need the cardio ðŸ¤

I used to be into road biking but I would ride 70s or 80s beaters. My best day was about 150 km, a bit short of 100 miles.
The closest I have to a road bike right now is a bike that was given to me as a fixed gear but I set up as a 3-speed. For a while I was riding that a lot. I think it's a Gitane.
Makes a big difference to get the shoes and the pedals, but you want to be sure you know how to get out of them quick. But you make much better use of your calf muscles.

Yea, running beats your joints up bad. I was into it a lot more, but my knees were starting to kill me. Going for a ride is just more shit to deal with tho- put on kit, fill bottles, check tire pressure blah blah. Running is put shoes on and go. And I feel like a quick 2.5mi + some sprints is a tougher workout than most rides, hafta go far or climb high to get the same worn out feeling.
Anyway, finding the right route is key. We have some nice paths along the water here.. but they are full of pedestrians and it sucks dodging toddlers and dogs. Riding in traffic takes some balls, but most of the time there's a lot more room than people realize. Just have to ride like everyone around you is stupid and that you are invisible.
You serious about racing? I did a couple seasons of local cyclocross. What a stupid/fun sport 'oh you like riding bikes? Ride through that sand trap then dismount your bike and run with it up that set of stairs'

I found a nice little 5 mile loop through a local park and down a main road, my problem is this is a major city and on the first day I popped a tube because of invisible glass in the bike lane. It's safe though I'm not so worried about cars. I did the loop at 6AM to beat the pedestrians and was straight up doing like 25moh on a trail next to a creek watching the sunrise, those types of things make it worth the money, otherwise I'd have been sitting inside playing video games lol
It's funny though because I'm riding in my street clothes and I see dudes in spandex and I am riding a nicer bike than them. I even have Odyssey BMX pedals and not clips and road bike shoes so I look like I probably stole the thing lmao

I also can't wait to ride tripping when it warms up, probably only on LSD though, not trying to have any mind bending mushroom trips as I get lost in my own hood contemplating my life 🧬

I plan to get back into cycling after I finish recovering from my knee surgery. I was doing quite a bit of running/soccer/backpacking before my knee gave me problems, so scratching so that for a while and plan to swim and cycle more often this coming year. I bought a Diamondback road bike last year and have maybe 100 miles on it so far, but excited to get back to it. I also plan to ride the 12 miles to and from my work everyday the weather is decent enough this coming year as well.
If you ever ride at night I definitely recommend spending a couple extra bucks and getting quality lights for front and back. People are idiots, don’t give them a chance to hit you.

I competed in an awesome college cycle event that went from house to house drinking, ate mushroom’s halfway through and had a blast. Road 20-30 miles when we got done on my own and had one of the best rides of my life. It seemed effortless to ride up huge country hills, and the feeling of the summer evening air as I road was amazing.

Man, i remember a trip one time, took a couple tabs with some buddies. Coming up in their apartment, and it was starting to get kinda bad vibe uncomfortable.. I dunno who, but one of us suggested a bike ride. As SOON as we got rolling all of us were grinning, saying like yes THISSS, we're FREEEE. Yay bikes

Not much into riding on the road - I've got motorbikes for that - but I do love being on two wheels so I have one of these for downhill and dirt:

And one of these for fucking around and playing with my dog:

My parents were both pretty crazy for road riding before I came along though. They taught me very early on to love being on two wheels. That was when lived in Holland too, where bicycling is a hugely encouraged way of life/transport...

Dude riding no mushrooms is the best!! I do not live in the hood however, so not sure how that works.
I have a pretty sweet custom trek. Got it second hand from an old bosses friend. It's pretty dang nice, but definitely not carbon fiber.
Being on my feet is also the only reason I don't run actually. Been meaning to get into biking daily as exercise but it hasn't happened yet.

I could not have ran the way I did while I was strength training, big muscles take up all your energy. After I took a break from weight lifting I wanted to push myself in a different way. I dropped like 30 pounds over 6 months just running and pushing myself and when I hit a half marathon one day without even realizing the distance I ran without going back and measuring until later, I knew I could do a marathon if I kept training. But I think I'm done with that for now, felt better than lifting in a lot of ways though.
I have never found out how far I can push myself with cycling, I really wonder because as a kid I was always on two wheels, jumping random shit everyday. I bet I could impress myself now

100 mile days for even a fairly average rider isn't out of the question on a bicycle, especially if the terrain is mostly flat.
I ride 10 miles trips basically at full blast with 1000 feet of climb and it's no problem. Getting a few 30 or 40 mile training rides in then attempting 100 miles isn't an uncommon strategy. The long ride is just a matter of taking your time, hydrating, and not letting a 10/11 hour day on the bicycle bother you too much.
