Mushroom envy

I have been growing blue oysters from liquid cultures. While I get decent sized harvests, I never get this type of over crowded growth that I get through grow kits sold online. What is the secret? Do they use hormones, supplements, etc?
Also, as it is mid-flush and quite crowded for the small block, is there anything I can do help them mature before the substrate is spent?

Most I would guess are using soy hulls as a supplement and they are using a high-quality grain spawn. You can not get anything any better than your spawn can grow. 3015 and Aloha Medicinals Elma have always been good to me as far as weight and size of the mushrooms...

The above was grown too long but I just wanted to et as much weight as I could.

- How can I supplement this block and prevent it from being spent before the mushrooms mature? - Is soy hull better than wheat bran?
Thanks as always for your advice.

Soy hulls are much better than wheat bran. Your second flush is usually about half the size of the 1st flush no matter what you use. The 2nd flush comes about 2 weeks after the 1st flush. For those reasons I only do one flush. I get one flush a week doing one flush and done or I could get two flushes in 3 weeks with the second flush being half the size of the 1st. It does not make sense to waste the space in the fruiting chamber. It only costs me about a dollar to make a 5 lb bag of sub so waiting for a 2nd flush hurts your bottom end in my opinion.

Thanks. I am trying to figure out how to supplement or augment the substrate in the middle of the first flush. Let me know what you think.

just leave it unsupplemented. You will not be able to supplement once it is colonized. If you try to supplement now you will just destroy anything you could have potentially gotten.

ShroomsISay01, are you saying just for oysters or for any mushroom in general that Soy is better than Wheat? I have a really hard time finding soy but the wheat bran I buy is way more expensive than if I could get soy...

Soy is better for most, but I've seen some commercial growers supplementing shiitake with wheat bran instead of soy.
And depending where you are, prices for soy and wheat fluctuate. For instance, wheat bran here is $22/25kg and soy is $28/25kg. Both are ridiculously high priced.

If you find the right feed store near you that can order it, they can get it for you for WAY cheaper. Thats the premium advantage of soy is just how dirt cheap it is for how much yield you get. I get 50lb bags for 12$. Do some digging and ASK stores if they will order it for you.

I get my soy hulls from southern states $5 for 50 lbs. I tried tractor supply when I was looking and they did not have it. You are going to have to look for feed stores near you they are usually small stores that are nothing like tractor supply.
Just type in "feed stores near me" without the quotes and then start calling.
