trichocereus: nursery trays and first pots size advise sought (newbie)
    #27114428 - 12/29/20 03:04 PM (3 years, 30 days ago)

hello.
ive decided to grow some cacti. various trichocereus seeds.
i have a few questions if you'd be kind to answer for me

How deep should the nursery tray be? any limit to width or length?
how big are the first pots you put the seedlings into from the nursery tray? 1 inch diameter or bigger?
After a year the seedlings are about an inch high right? how tall are they after year two and when do they get to adult growing speed (20-30cm a year e.t.c)

thanks very much.
im excited about this new project but i feel underprepared.

I usually plant seeds in disposable bakeware, followed by propagation trays, and occasionally a salvaged pie pan. There are no hard constrains as to size; depth should be at least 1.5" deep, 2.5" - 4" is a good depth. Seed trays should be wide enough to accommodate the contents and can small bake pans or 1020 trays with short or high domes. Some Thai nurseries use parfait cups with an uncut dome lid and place a 2" or 3" pot inside; great for small counts or specific plants.

Seed trays should have bright but diffused light. Full sun diffused by 40% - 60% shade cloth is a good target range; temperature should ideally be 75-85*F but as low as 55*F and 95*F should also allow for germination.

I usually transplant into 2.25" square pots (32 flat), or into 3.5" round pots.
4"-6" are also good pots to use if your seedlings are 2-3", or you are de-grafting a large scion. Seedlings being transplanted from trays should be between 1-3" in height if you got a full year of growth in. Growth rates vary and seedlings in richer dirt, larger pots, etc, will grow larger at a faster rate than seedling put into tiny pots. Seedlings that get evenly moist dirt most of the time will also stay plump and grow relatively fast. Seedlings by year two should be 3"-6", by year three, 6"-10" or more.

Of course, this is dependent on you getting things mostly mostly right and if you are new to growing cactus seedlings, don't expect to get great results right away. I killed seedlings by the hundreds, trays of them, before I started getting it mostly right.

Grafting will get you a lot more growth early on and I encourage you to graft as much as possible.

Here is a 32 flat, I recommend getting the 1020 trays to go with them for extra support and to keep them from drying out so fast. I just ordered 1020s without holes so I can bottom water and keep the dirt from drying out quickly and being a pain to re-wet, might be something to look at. Also shown are some various pot sizes I use, the 3.5" pots have slits for handles and are usually the ones you see in box stores priced around $4. The larger ones are 5.5" and typically I use them for de-grafts or microdwarf tomatoes. 5.5" is my go-to standard pot for Pereskiopsis grafts. The pot size provides ample leg room for the plant without taking up too much space.

I'm going to try out #50 propagation flats with 1020 trays (no holes), for seedling transplants. I usually use 72 and 144 flats for starting annuals and herbs and they are transplanted OUT of those, not in; but for cactus, they 32s or 50s should be an economical way to handle seedlings from germination trays. They cn also accept humidity domes of their own.

Here is a down and dirty on how to plant em and what I usually use.

Amazing reply thankyou very much!!! :mushroom2:
Sorry it took me a while to respond. Been unwell.

I got some nice trays, and will go with the 32 flat I think when the time comes.

How big could a 3" seedling grow once moved into a 2.5" square pot (32flat) before needing a bigger pot? thanks

This picture is several months old but the seedlings in the red box are fairly neglected right now and in 2.5" pots. They are in need of re-potting ATM but space is an issue. I haven't measured them lately, but the pots are 4" tall.

This seedling is one I'm mailing out tomorrow and it was re-potted into a 3.5" standard round pot and growing with a gravel top dressing for a few months at least.

Seedlings will probably reach 4-5" before pushing the limits of a 2.5" pot, you can always cut the roots, change the dirt, and keep growing them but this has diminishing returns. I would probably move up to a 4.5" pot or larger after a 2.5" pot.
