Rhizopogon occidentalis

This was a cool first find for me! Rhizopogon occidentalis. Western Pogie.

It was bulging through the ground near pine trees in a planter box. It was quite bouncy; we were able to play a decent round of hacky sack with it. Pretty neat!

Are those edible? They kind of remind me of truffles.

They are in the same family/species as Truffles. Conflicting reports on edibility (from what I can tell) and they sort of just smell like "a mushroom" so I think I will pass. But a cool find regardless!

Yeah dude, when you live in an area devoid of fungus, you eat some pretty bad tasting mushrooms at times :smirk:

Mica caps are actually pretty good imo. Not texture wise but the flavor. Good for making sauces.
